Cleaning up a vintage B&D Utility drill

Its been a little while since I've had time to do any restorations in the shop, but decided to take a day and finally got around to cleaning up a grease & dirt covered vintage Black & Decker U-20 1/2" Utility drill.

Was actually quite surprised by how robust the factory paint was on the drill once I got the decades of grease and grit off the drill.

Stripped it down to the bare case, soaked the parts for a few hours in solvent and wire brushed it back down to the factory coating.

With the exception of the wiring, the drill looked practically new inside so I didn't have to do much cleaning outside of getting the old grease out of the gear case.

Relubed the case, put a new Skilsaw cord & strain relief (95104L) on it and made sure it was properly grounded. Runs like new and has PLENTY of power for being a 70'ish year old drill.

That cord and strain relief is a bit spendy (at least on Amazon).

Now I see the pictures, oddly I was seeing no attachment or URL at all before. That is a great looking drill, I have a few vintage B&D drills and saws that work well enough but could stand to be prettied up a bit.

That Milwaukee drill taken apart off to the right looks to be one of the last of the good drills before they sold out to TTI and cheapened everything up.

Great job!!!! . I have one just like that and need new brushes. I get a shock because the black is worn away and the screw exposed. The original chuck was made with an Allen Wrench key
