Good on ya!, I just finished dinner and was feeling good, when I sat down and read this, now I am hungry again. Great work on the fence, funny how the bulls just don't get peoples personal space!

Glad you had a good dinner, sorry about my pies:lol_hitti

Bulls are just exactly like two guys around a lot of girls. Ever see them get into a fight and the girls are not the least bit impressed. Once the big dog status is established they typically go on about their business. That's why when I had five pastures I would move cows instead of bulls. Just easier on the fences. Did you get any pie?:rocker:

AHA! So you were holding out and keeping the good stuff hidden from me :)
If I had known----heres mine. You can see that I am changing it from a 4 dr to a two door

You never asked:dunno: I cannot imagine making a four door into a two door. I've got a long way to go. I do have the two 54 Chevys. serious considering either setting up one of them to run backwards, new small headlights in the taillight openings. Or build a car with two front ends:eyecrazy:

dont leave us hanging, we will need the crust recipe.

OK, but just between us, don't pass it around or everyone will be making great pies.

IMG_0326_zps4vlgzah0.jpg

This is from a 1982 church recipe book. Grandma Eva's Never Fail is the one I use. It was put in by my wife Sharon. She failed to mention to cut in the shortening but all ingredients cut in together. I use a pastry cutter, power blending may damage the mixture, I don't know, just hearsay. By the way, I use Crisco Baking Sticks for the shortening, very good and very convenient.

Sharon's mom was Vi Box. She made great fried pies so her recipe is worth trying but I have not made any.

Thanks again for the great comments guys.:thumbup:

Pies look yummy! Sad to see a nice old 56 Chevy, too bad its upside down and in a wash out. It needs to head closer to the new shop, and replace with a couple of big rocks. I see some good trim parts on it.
Happy Thanksgiving all!

Even worse to own it and not do anything about it. For 31 years:willy_nil What was I thinking?:willy_nil:willy_nil Oh yeah! I wasn't thinking, obviously. A load of gravel would replace it.

x2

It looks pretty tasty. Sharing is caring right ?

GB.

Whoever thought I cared?

OK, guilty as charged, and hopefully you have seen the recipe by now. It's really not off topic: all the pie eaters like garages too:rocker::rocker:

We're not surprised you're an old geezer. Is this a bit of a revelation to you? So sorry. I'll post a little about the '56 later on.

I guess it's a holiday in the US, so we can just wander off topic a bit. Some. OK, a lot. Thanks for all the comments!:bowdown:

B, your not the only one, my Nomad had way more rust, or should I say areas eaten away by the rust.

You know, it helps to be in an area that uses little road salt and is far from the coast. More later on...

"His cows came up to visit, they didn't think I was doing it right. They didn't say anything, out of courtesy, but I could see it in their eyes. Laughing cows."

Andy, you seem to be the "Cow Whisperer". but you never have listened to me when I've spoke to you about the cows and their trust. Even though you tend to a small herd and I don't have any at this time, I must insist once again that u=you need to stop trusting those cows. As far as them laughing cows, I must say bull. They're cheesy and don't think much of us snacking on them. But you know what you're doing and I'll stop trying to tell you about how to deal with your heifers. All I'm going to say is that's a lot of bull that digs under a fence. Be careful. And don't milk the fence situation too long.

Oh, thanks for the visual tour of the back 40.

I really don't trust them, except they have a fully developed hierarchy. I intend to be the top cow and expect them all to know that. Sometimes it takes a little tough love. This young bull will occasionally dip his head at me (that means a challenge, kind of like shooting you the bird) That gets him a whack on the end of the nose, which is tender. He doesn't challenge me in the pen or pasture now but sometimes through the fence. He is surprised at the response he gets. I climb straight over the fence and attack him. He turns away quietly, I was just joking. Bull. So I follow him and ask "You want to take me on". He always says "we're good".

You have raised cows? I've had as many as 105 momma cows in five pastures with five bulls but don't consider myself an expert. But I still don't think they have any idea about where cattle go when they leave the farm. I don't ignore your advice, but don't really trust the cows either. We do spend our quiet time together. Sometimes I herd them very slowly, just talking and walking and they go where I want because they actually know what I want them to do.

hate to see that 56 sitting there rotting. put it on craigslist lol youll have someone come pull it out and put some cash in your pocket

It's a conundrum. I wish I had time to maximize the return on what I have, all it takes is a little time:willy_nil

yes, i am too the old geezer. but memories are sometimes the best times. just read oif's blogs. way fun.

You've seen old people in nursing homes, just rocking back and forth. I don't envy them, but I guarantee you they are reliving the old times, remembering when they were the king of the hill. At least it makes me feel better.

A word about the '56 Chevy.

Those with squeamish stomachs should leave the theater now.

It gets worse.

This is a two door hardtop. It had a clean dash when I first crawled under it thirty years ago.

You can see the frame was removed (chassis was sold for scrap) and the body used for erosion control. they used a cable through the roof to lift it with a dozer. :( :( :(

A fire came through about fifteen years ago and burned the interior :( :( :( :( :( :(

The tail light which opens for the gas cap access is buried. Maybe good shape, maybe broken, I've never dug it out.

There is some good stainless trim, and the grill is "mostly" good.

I really want to dig it out and have a look at it. I'm not willing to sell it for $100 and let them part it out. It has some good floor pans, for instance. There are other cars buried on the place. I let the neighbors kids take some some junk and I'm not sure what they took. After they left trash in the pasture, like broken glass and wire I stopped them. The cars are closer to their house than mine, and they think nothing of cutting the fence to get access.

In my defense, the picture is misleading. The trees in the distance are down fifteen feet from where I'm standing. The car is down about six feet from the edge of the field. It is a job to climb down to it. It will be a job to get it out without doing more damage. But I'm sure the son in law's backhoe will get it out easily enough. Do I need more junk to hoard:dunno:

I'll go take an inventory for you guys. I know there is still a 56 Ford and a Morris Minor. And I think a Pontiac station wagon. They may have taken the Chevy 5 window pickup cab like they took my 50 Studebaker pickup bed trailer with the Ford rear end under it. I specifically told them to not take that. You can't cry over spilt milk but you can be more careful to not spill the milk.

I guess you guys want to poke around in my ditches? ***** my gullies?

OIF, I am sitting here shacking with shock, sweating and panting slightly. No, not over the pie! over the 56.
These at before and during the rust removal from my nomad. The only original part left is the roof skin and rear quarter panels. Everything else was replaced.
IMG_4340.jpg IMG_4332.jpg
I hope you do get the time to lift it out and find someone to bring it back to life. Do you know that line from the movie "Christine"?, it goes something like "nothing sweeter than the smell of a new car, septing maybe that of p....."
Just thought I would leave you with that thought.

ANDY: i hope those pumpkin pies taste as good as they look. BTW did you know that just because it SAYS PUMPKIN on the can if you might have used that it might not be Pumpkin. my wife was telling me the other day that companies are able to just put any kind of SQUASH in a can and call it Pumpkin.

anyway i just made molasses or ginger cookies from scratch this year for the first time and i'm going to make some more this morning. did you really just start cooking at 65 or have you always cooked and just started baking pies then? i have a pretty good German Pancake recipe if you might like to make one for breakfast some day. it's a great way to eat 4 eggs.

funny how you show one of your upside down wrecked cars in ditch and it gets so much attention. even though i'm a youngin i remember when you could buy one of those 56 Chevy cars running that wasn't too rusty for maybe $500 and i had a driver's license and the cash and passed cause i bought a 1963 Comet with 20,000 miles on it for less. i paid $3600 in 1977 for a 1970 Mach1 with a 428 cobra jet in in that had 30,000 miles on it. it wasn't that comfortable, but it could move down the road pretty good.

keep keeping us smiling and showing us all your MINI TALENTS like fence building and such. i'm half expecting videos of you wrestling your bull just for exercise.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

Big transformation on the Nomad! I guess I've not seen the "after" pictures :(

Never saw the movie "Christine", and apparently your hand slipped when typing "puppies".

What??? Now we find out about the good stuff! Forget about International trucks, you have Fords! I'm definitely going to have to drive 700 miles to visit you again :)

fords? You like Fords? Hmmm. The gate is always open. And if you do show up, I'll get my son in law to come over with his backhoe and we can do a little archaeological excavation. Of course all finds belong to the State (me in this case).

There is such a blurred line between squash and pumpkin. And so many types of each. I read on the Libby's can 100% pumpkin. But I'm grew up (to the extent I grew up) in the south (love grits, etc.) and can enjoy sweet potato pie just as much as pumpkin.:dunno:

I had never cooked except over a camp fire in Boy Scouts. I could flip pancakes and have them land in the pan. Up to age 65 my wife would have told you if something happened to her I would starve. All I thought the kitchen was for was fixing things and have cleaned out a carburetor more than once in the kitchen sink.:scared:

So, yes, at 65 I started from ground zero. I fixed a full Christmas dinner for my family last year, got everything ready at the same time. They were astounded. My wife's family has yet to try anything except pies and an occasional bowl of home made stew or soup.

Everyone is in that same boat, wishing we had kept a little more, all the while thinking I have kept too much.

No bull wrestling for me, that would be a major talent. And I would not try to film me kicking him in the nose when he gets frisky. Not a good time to try to multi-task...

As always, i appreciate each and every comment!:rocker::rocker::rocker:

Beautiful clear crisp morning today (-2C) so after feeding the cows I took a little walkabout.

Here's the ditch where the remains of the Ford and Morris Minor reside.

IMG_0327_zpsimdpgo6k.jpg

I've done my share of filling in here.

Not looking good for the Morris. I think I see a brake or clutch pedal. And next to it a glove box opening?

IMG_0328_zpsjdxkdiqp.jpg

IMG_0329_zpsjrdzonoa.jpg

I did find the Ford!

IMG_0330_zpsqrnl9oxk.jpg

Right front fender, right side up! Looks pristine!! At least a trim piece or two.

From a little farther away, you can see the broken headlight. (my jacket is in the picture because the sun was low in the east and I had to shield the lens from direct sunlight)

IMG_0331_zpsamyoetsb.jpg

The Morris is just to the right an under the Ford.

I turned around to walk down to the '56 and see a 3 ft black walnut tree.

IMG_0332_zpsrfb6zcml.jpg

I didn't know that was there!

Time for Thanksgiving dinner, I'll post my morning pictures of the 1956 Belair Hardtop later.

Have a great day!

My first car was a 56 Chevy, bought it in 1972, paid $250.00 and it had a 6 cylinder with 3 on the tree. I keep that car until 1982, drove it from Winfield Ks, to Aurora Co. Bought a house in Aurora and parked it behind the garage. I was living with my BIL until the house was all painted inside. He lived about 4 houses down the alley. I was sleeping in the basement after a long day of work at the new (old) house. I left about 3 am, and about 4 am I thought I heard a car rumbling down the alley.:dunno: I got up about 6 am to start work at my new house and noticed something was different while walking down the alley, my 56 had been stolen, after only 3 days in Aurora. They found it a week later on Fillmore street downtown Denver. Brought it back to my new house and it was a shell, everything that was bolted on was gone. Even the clutch pedal, gas tank, glass, motor ,front clip and trunk lid. Then my new house got broken into about a month later. Put the house up for sale and moved back to Winfield.

=2C? What is that in America? :)

Drat! Your 56 Ford is a 55. You can keep that one :)

Hmmm.... -2C is -2C in America, two degrees below freezing.

Well, if it's a 55 I guess it will just stay in the ditch. I actually prefer a '55.

28F :)

Wow! Tough neighborhood. Glad you made it back to Kansas. Winfield is such a nice town. Did you get any push back since you were moving from Aurora?

I crept up on the '56 from the woods.

IMG_0334_zpsj7frviin.jpg

It's all uphill from here. Looks like the hood is upside down under the car

IMG_0335_zpsjuvvklym.jpg

Front trim on the hood is bright but looks like it is cracked in the middle

IMG_0336_zpsqco9iahx.jpg

Turn signal trim looks good but the right front and right rear fenders are damaged, probably from being shoved into the ditch.

IMG_0337_zpsyq0obvmt.jpg

Bel Air on rear fender looks pristine

IMG_0338_zpsac7y36uc.jpg

And the medallion may just need paint, or was it porcelain filled?

IMG_0339_zpsjxhheyv5.jpg

Trunk trim looks good considering the way I stored it for over thirty years. That's dirt in the finger grips on the bottom.

IMG_0340_zpsygyw1xbe.jpg

Right tail light looks better than I thought it would. The spot on the lens is fire damage due to my lethargy.

IMG_0341_zpscca72nst.jpg

I pried open the door, and it is ugly inside, obviously burned. Perhaps there is some salvageable metal trim.

IMG_0342_zpsdaivhbcp.jpg

Walking away I took a shot of the graveyard. The Ford and Morris are just to the right of the isolated tree on the left. The Bel Air is right between the two tallest trees dead center.

IMG_0343_zpscqstnhx7.jpg

Walked across the field and found the station wagon, another car, and five window cab are gone. Maybe there is a car deep in the ground, this looks like a left front fender trim piece off of something mid-fifties.

IMG_0344_zpsdqexwipn.jpg

Maybe they were able to get high a couple of times from the sale of scrap. In all fairness I gave them permission. And I regret it.

Andy: so i was watching a movie where Cameron Diaz was in a junk hard digging out a double duece (Like i know what that means :dunno:) and she tells Tom Cruise KANSAS has the best ****. i think writers got it wrong cause looks like OKLAHOMA does. was your excuse to go out the back 160 to look for the bull or were you getting pics for BG so he could tell you that it's a 55 and not the 56 he needs parts for on the truck?

speaking of cooking i had requests to bake what i call Gramp's cookies or molasses and the recipe says ginger. pretty easy to make and i started baking cookies this year at age 60.

cheers and hope you enjoy your Thanksgiving and make sure to give a piece of pumpkin pie to the bull cause you'll need a few calfs this spring.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

That is at the same time sad and joyous. Sad they are in the ground but the joy of archeology.
The main one to save should be the Morris as that was my first car. How on earth did it end up in OK anyway?

I still think Kansas has the best ****. I had been thinking about the ditch fleet and as I was waiting tables in the cowfeteria I just went wild and took off to walk 3/8 mile down to see them. I'm now fired up to get the '56 out of the ditch.

That is at the same time sad and joyous. Sad they are in the ground but the joy of archeology.

You nailed it, both sad and joyous. Of course I have known they were there for many years. It could have been a selling point for the farm (private treaty sale, no realtor involved) but I think they hid them from me. We didn't walk close as we were touring the place.

I think the Morris may have disintegrated fi those look like Morris pedals to anyone.

How on earth did it wind up in Oklahoma? Upside down is how it would up:lol_hitti

I don't know now. I'm so confused. I had a flight to Sydney booked when Shorty claims to have it, and he may be 1/2 right. I'm thinking it is an intercontinental ruse to throw me off in an attempt to keep me from regaining my rightful ownership of 1/2's company issued DeWalt.:dunno:

So how about this lineup? From left to right - traditional Dodge Van, GMC pickup (1969ish), 64? Nova, Ford ******, 72 Nova.

IMG_0348_zpshz9tpv1a.jpg

They belong to my brother in law. Notice how I keep the grass carefully trimmed around them? I taught my cows how to do that.

Unfortunately the cows got to horsing around and pushed my road grader into the van :(

IMG_0349_zpsc0epto8q.jpg

I asked him today whether he would sell them to me. He has stored them in my pasture for fifteen to twenty years. I'd like to have the GMC and 64 Nova. 1972 Nova would be nice but it is his deceased only son's car and he really wants it. Said it would start right up and has a hot rod engine and competition transmission. Told me today he would consider selling some, but he wants the van next to his well house for storage. I'm not really a Dodge Van type of guy anyway, but it would be fun to customize, maybe chop way down.

Oh well, at least I can dream...

Wow! Didn't know you were that far south! When I really do plan a trip I'll do some real planning :rocker:

I like it, I like it a lot. Where is the 450 that tin came off of? As soon as I saw the snout I knew you had a 350 or 450!

It's in the shed. In the machine shop room, in this picture I posted back in July. Head is off and pistons are out. Cylinders need to be rehoned. Crank needs to be polished. It is a 450D and I have all the bearings, rings, and obsolete head gasket to put it back together. It has languished for too many years.

And you might recognize the two point lift arms in this picture

Many years ago This Old House did an episode on the spray cellulose insulation process. I did find a picture of the machine. Pretty sure this is a posed photo because in action, from what I recall, it looked like an oncoming snow blower.

You're right, I recall watching it.
On another note, several hours later and I'm not half through the thread
Extremely impressed OP.

Wow! Didn't know you were that far south! When I really do plan a trip I'll do some real planning :rocker:

Sorry OP, I saw that a little later. I'm going from start to finish...hopefully you get that girl running, closest thing we've got to that is a Super MD (/TD6).

Plan is to get on the 450D soon. Real soon. I've also got a SMDTA, but not restored. Not too many of them around.

Hope you're enjoying the thread. I appreciate the visits and comments:thumbup:

Terrick really meant the sweet smell of Andy's pumpkin pie before he had a slip of the hand :pimpflash

If you haven't seen Christine then try to make some time. Better still read the novel first, Stephen King.

Might be time to start a recipe thread, I'm hungry. Also worked out the shortening to buy locally here to try your pie crust out.

GB

Edit: found an existing recipe thread here that needed reviving, maybe you guys can pop your pie and molasses bickies in there too?

Pumpkin, not Puppies or Kittens - that makes sense, thanks!

We just never seem to have time for movies, see very few of them. As I recall, "Christine" is probably not a relaxing "easy listening" type of movie?

Good find on the recipe thread. I'll copy and paste over there.

Some more junk around the place, a Model T trailer I bought at an auction many years ago, towed it home full from the auction. It used to have a full wooden bed, but, alas, grass fires

IMG_0350_zpsfx9rop7e.jpg

Still has the bottom half of the engine and front and rear wishbones. Also has a spring taking tension on the steering gear which prevents side sway common in four wheel trailers. I towed it home at up to 40 mph! I used it to haul hay several times behind a tractor.

Six rivet axle

IMG_0351_zpsnewa85pf.jpg

A couple of pickup beds I never got around to making pickup bed trailers out of

My '52 F-5 dump truck

IMG_0354_zpsmtffuzrm.jpg

I've tried to sell it for as little as $500. Glad I had no takers:thumbup:

IMG_0355_zpsrioiqfbn.jpg

And finally my hay bus

IMG_0356_zpsbh1rtmz1.jpg

I set it out by a road thinking I'd have some takers but only junk buyers (hmmm, maybe a correlation there? :headscrat)

Body was shortened by a young friend.

IMG_0357_zps4kz9fngo.jpg

He drove it 75 miles to my place with very poor brakes and no lights except the school bus emergency lights.

Made a pretty good crew cab, actually.

IMG_0358_zps7minnbd8.jpg

He was laughing that when he used the school bus flashers in the twilight people would pull off the road. The clutch went out while we were hauling hay on the rural roads so I bought it from him to get it off the highway.

IMG_0359_zpsech7pvmd.jpg

What to do with it? Chop the cab down to four inch windows? Part it out (single speed rear axle) Don't know what the engine is, 2bbl carburetor

IMG_0360_zpsabrg2okg.jpg

Ran when parked!:rocker:

Actually ran pretty good, just needed a clutch, I vaguely recall trying to adjust it. We hauled 250 square bales on it a couple of times (that's about 7 tons).

IMG_0362_zpswrv7g7to.jpg

Tires are all still up, hasn't been sitting more than about 15 years.:willy_nil

Seems like you and I have a lot of the same similarity's on vehicles. I had a 64 Ford bus that was converted to a RV, that was a fun bus!:willy_nil The motor in that bus looks like a 348? The one problem with buses is the parts are more expensive because of all the government rules on school buses:sad:
Have you seen your cows horsin around? and if you had horses would they cow around or cow down? :dunno::lol:

I wish it was a Chevy 348. I need one, more specifically I need a 409. She's real fine, my 409. Never heard of a Ford 348.

I have seen horses cow-er. And I've been known to make an *** of myself. And used to have employees who would dog it. That's a little catty, I know. I was just trying to get your goat. So the monkey's on your back. I should have sent this by snail mail, you'd have had a whale of a good time with it. Don't try to worm into this conversation eagle eye. You'll just crow about it. I'd better snake my way out of this, obviously I can't buffalo you. You'll just duck my jabs and get goosey on me.

The bus would make a cool tractor hauler.

That's thinking! I like the idea of chopping the top 18".

Thanks for a great read. A lot of good information and some bull stories too.

Wait! Are you calling bull on my thread?

Crust recipes and who doesn't like pie? This thread has something for everyone.

And to be honest, it's not just the upper crust either, we cater to my kind of people too!:rocker:

Engine is a FE or FT series, probably a 360 or 390.

That makes sense. Any easy way to tell a 360 from a 390? 390 with a two barrel is possible? Of course a 360 with a two barrel is a lot of engine per venturi.

Thanks for the visits guys! Each and every comment is greatly appreciated, even if they are (much needed) criticism.

I did get a little shed time in today. Putting up lights.

Now that we're officially on topic, last night just before dark I dashed over to the farm next door. They haven't lived there since the forties, at least. It has never sold, the homesteader's family owns it. I have it leased for pasture and hay. The owner is a childhood acquaintance of my wife's. I asked him a few years ago about some junk on the place. He said take anything you want. I poked around a found a few old car hulks. One he said he took apart as a young man. He is in his seventies and the car is scattered where he disassembled it. The 56 made me want to go take inventory on the farm next door, never can have too much junk, can you?

This one is upside down, no frame, suicide doors latch together in the middle.

And a dodge truck cab, pretty rough

IMG_0364_zpsidub9w35.jpg

This hood still has side panels with trim, and is barely grown into the tree, might not be rotted off at the ground

Another Dodge cab

In another area, where he took the cars apart, is the car with this fender. Wheel well in each fender, look how narrow they are.

IMG_0370_zpsj8wzxgb0.jpg

Right rear quarter. I don't know what it is, pretty sure it goes with the fenders. May be a 34 Buick.

IMG_0371_zpslde0qcks.jpg

Cowl and oil pan. Looks like GM troughs for rod dippers to me. And the cowl lights look like 34 Buick I think. I believe the rods are to clamp the spare tire on.

IMG_0373_zpsfdbyg12q.jpg

There's the block

IMG_0374_zpslsypmyud.jpg

When I first saw the old Buick? I thought about making wall decorations out of it. Like a rear quarter window picture frame, and a wheel well wine cooler. Now with the advent of rat rods, I could stick some of this stuff on my show truck and have a rat rod:willy_nil

Had enough?
