That makes sense; it's not fun piggybacking a heavy skidsteer right on the end everywhere you go. I should have known you'd have both the right tool for the job and a substitute, shame on me.

You keep teasing us but we keep not seeing any pictures of those wheels. I might just drive over and get them.

Right, pics next time I'm in the shed.

I thought I would learn how many to melt for a job, but I'm so afraid of coming up short I always melt too much and remuffin the excess.

I'd do the same. Easier to deal with the excess than wast time and fuel.

Well, I guess I missed lithium, and bismuth. I figure the butter should melt before the biscuit.:lol_hitti But it's just silly to think about spreading magnesium on on a muffin.

That is the lite spread of course :spit: :lol_hitti

They were missing for me as well. A Pmech's thread has the PhotoBucket calling card.

Your computer probably has them cached from two years ago...

.... see Twobytes response below. I had a browser plugin installed that avoids the PB restrictions.

I also started on a pouring shank for cast crucibles (instead of my pipe crucible). Used my cone for the first time. I've had it several years (new product sponsored by my blacksmith association, Salt Fork Craftsmen).

What ho... a cone anvil sighting in the wild? It looks new too! What other secret treasures do you keep from us Andy?!?

Hope you have a fun day with your old friend!

You didn't install the "Photobucket Hotlink Fix" Chrome extension and forget about it did you Guster?

That has to be it.

Don't have issues with PB at work or at home. Though I think "Photobucket Hotlink Fix" stopped working for me and I swapped to another like it. Work network blocks some of the hosts like dropbox and one-drive as well as any of the ones owned or authenticated using yahoo even though Flickr kinda works. That is why I need to look at Lyndon's thread from hom or on my mobile.

I need to look around again. Tried Chrome and didn't like the spam that came with it. Might should have tried it fried. Is there an easy fix for IE or Firefox?

It's not fun taking a steel tracked machine up steep steel ramps. I placed it just ahead of the axles and it pulled well. But puckered me up getting it on and off.

I do need more stuff...

Blacksmith cones are few and far between. The club had been making small swage blocks for years (yes, I've got one, $65) and then had the idea for a cone. They charged us $100 at the foundry and that was the member's price. It's pretty thick and worked well, I just didn't have good tongs to hold the ring (in the plan).

Hope you have a fun day with your old friend!

Ahhh, My Friend Flickr.

We had a great time today. He brought me some parting compound and a pair of home made lead hammers (his right hand) and I gave him some bentonite and made him an aluminum hammer (#21) and a trivet for his wife. He is going to finish both.

attachment.php

We also poured my tool holder clamp. I was truthfully expecting the spike to not pour. Sadly I was wrong again.

attachment.php

It fits in pretty well.

attachment.php

When the arch is stowed in this position the yellow ring wanted to rise so this clamp will hold it down firmly as well as give me a convenient place to hang my dross spoon.

attachment.php

And gave me an excuse to cast something else.:lol_hitti

It's on to the shelf bracket machining tomorrow.

Thanks for the visits!!

Andy, great work as we have come to expect..

Thank you for your kindness.

I did four pours in about an hour this morning. The larger burner is making things a lot faster. I finally got around to cutting up and melting the radiator Bobby gave me. (his Mustang fan had gotten into it)

Cutting it with a sawzall.

Thanks for stopping in!

Andy: your forge just keeps getting better. i love the clamps and it's nice you were able to cast in your name too.

just wondering since everytime I've been to the midwest the wind seems to blow how are you managing with an open air forge area? or did you enclose one or several sides? or maybe it blows less in the morning so you get your forging done then before it blows?

hope you enjoyed your Saturday as much as I did mine.

cheers

Thanks, Drives!

Interesting comment about the wind. A little wind is desirable as you can stand to the side and noxious fumes are swept away. Anything up to 20 mph is not an issue, but over that I lose a lot of heat and it's just not as much fun.

I have always said how much I like Oklahoma (I live here by choice having been mostly around the world and had the ability to decide where to live) and don't mind the wind, because without the wind it would be like San Diego and I couldn't afford to live here.

Thanks for stopping by!!

Don't drink the tea on the counter, that's caustic I've been cleaning files in.

We had a really nice day here today.

Early this morning I was checking the cows and let three of the heifers out to be with the bull. His leg is going down, but foot is still swelled up tight. He is walking on it nicely, however.

attachment.php

My friend brought my sprayer back and stayed to watch me make him a hammer. Maybe not, no pictures :( He is a refinery heater expert and like my burner and flame, so I was pleased.

But I did finally get started on milling the clamps. First step is to get the rest of the sprues off, I got ten of 48 off. But it's a start.

Grandson's graduation from high school tomorrow, so no QST. That's OK.

Thanks for the visits!!

I managed to get out early this morning before going to my grandson's graduation. Got all the bottom clamps cleaned up from the sprue locations, and two of the top clamps. Slow and steady.

I learned two things. 1 I should have cut all the base material before making them. I wound up with two widths (0.080" different) so had to sort and make two different widths. 2 I didn't sprue all the pieces the same. If they had all been the same it would have saved some additional setups.

Here's one that required a skim cut over the entire bottom.

Working my way through the stack.

My little 6' 2" grandson (who went to visit Bobby with me) has now completed home school high school and is headed to Oklahoma State University in the fall.

Early bird catches the aluminium swarf?

Congrats on getting one of the brood off to tertiary education.

Here's those wheels I mentioned. Almost 10"x3"... heavy enough to make me groan getting them out the bottom shelf.

It is especially gratifying when they are intelligent, thoughtful, and kind. He will do well at whatever he tries, and most importantly, he will try something.:bounce:

Those wheels look made to be muller wheels. What you need now is a spare concrete mixer.:lol_hitti

Andy it's fantastic to see young ones make their way in life..

The rodents eventually go on their way and it's hard to remember when they were little.:thumbup: His nest is close to the ground so if he should not fly first try he will get another chance. I was just commenting to my wife last week, we have a 4m by 4m box culvert under a turnpike we drive through and the barn swallows make their mud nests at the top. They swarm out with every car. The same type swallow also builds under the beams on our 5m high bridges. My comment to her was those swallows grow babies who can fly first try...

Handy: I know it's your rest day so no hurry on answering this, but you put this over on TB's thread and I just want some clarification since the last time i drove close to your part of the country winds were in the 65+ mph range. so would that be an inch or two cause the locals said that kind of wind was normal?

Great compromise on the cubby house!

Drives was a little off on his assessment of wind, we actually measure it in inches. A 1/4" wind is not bad, while a 1" wind is tough to walk in, and anything over a 2" wind just stay inside.

BTW I didn't drink the tea on the bench with the files in it and still waiting for some good stuff, but since your coke was cold I grabbed another.

cheers

Whatever are you referring to?:lol_hitti

Good show on not drinking the caustic! The Coke stays cold, but I have to defrost it once per month in the summer. No matter, I drink enough I can remember to do the defrost. When I'm running the furnace at 1,800F it gets me warm and dry so I grab a cold Coke. When I'm finished with it, it goes straight into the crucible. No recycling step necessary.

In other news, I've got a big day coming. I'm up to 96 heats on my new furnace and at 100 heats I'm going to clean it up good and inspect it for any deterioration. Superficially it looks like the first day I fired it.

Poured a hammer and melted some scrap today, then spent a little over an hour and milled the sprue off all 24 top pieces (on the right).

attachment.php

The girls' names came out ok on most of them.

Next step is to mate tops and bottoms, match mark them, then drill two mounting holes in each set.

Thanks for stopping by. There's plenty of dimes on the Coke machine so don't be shy.

Finally. No one except Guster has asked, and he did so privately. I checked with Bob and he knew. Hmmm. We agreed to wait until someone asked publicly. Maybe everyone understood. Maybe not.

So, thanks for asking.

In the US there is a logo WWJD, for "What Would Jesus Do?" Intended to make people think before they act. I've never been big on it, but it is pretty common.

So it comes down to my doing a little better job because I know I'm going to post pictures on GJ and know the average here does lots better than I do.

So I ask myself "What Would 1/2 Cup Do?" And I do a little better.

My signature line is just to honor an old man down under whom I have come to respect greatly.:bowdown::bowdown:

And I was increasing the font regularly until someone asked. Glad it was you!!:lol_hitti

Andy,
That is GOLD!
The honor is certainly well deserved!!!

Cheers!

Thanks Slim!! 1/2 Cup is certainly an icon of the best of Garage Journal.

Andy I can't stop wondering. That's awesome! :thumbup::bowdown:

Thanks Vladimir!!

And so easy.

Today was forecast to be light wind, 5 to 10 mph (0.001" to 0.0015") so it was time to spray for weeds. I like to spray in mid-May, but everything is late this year. Yellowhop clover is in full bloom and that's my cue it's time to spray. Light wind is important for me to get good coverage since I have a boomless sprayer which shoots a stream 15 ft each way for 30 ft coverage. Gusting winds can blow that stream and affect coverage.

I hadn't run the tractor since last summer (I'm pretty busy in my foundry) but in checking over the tractor I found the air intake almost plugged with oily debris.

attachment.php

Got that cleaned and fired the tractor up. Smooth and sweet!

Then hooked up the sprayer and started loading water. 280 gallons.

attachment.php

The "new" tire from last year gave out when loaned out last week.

attachment.php

The tread is coming off and it is leaking. So I went to the field with it. It made the first load of 280 gallons spread over 14 acres. But went flat on the way back to the House. The other one is still fine.

attachment.php

These are 14 inch with a big center hole. Somwhow I have no 14" tires.

But I did find a 16" in my junk pile. Center hole was a little small so I placed two washers on each lug bolt to space the rim out. It's a wide wheel and the best fit was a pickup L/T tire.

attachment.php

Barely clearance, but it mounted.

attachment.php

Got to spraying a 30 ft wide pattern andsoon the relief valve broke off when the mast bounced out of it's socket. I drove back to the house (1/2 mile) and put a plug in for now. I can avoid needing it.

attachment.php

Then I had to break for a few hours. What an experience!

Thanks for the comments, guys!!

Andy, you are making me blush..

:bowdown::bowdown: Just blush away...

Steve, so what color IS your RED face? :lol_hitti:lol_hitti

:lol_hitti:lol_hitti

Slim, you have it in one.

I am just so humbled to be thought of in such a way.

To be honest there are many many others on the GJ that would fit the tag:thumbup:

Regards

To be honest, it's not the impeccable work nor the ubiquitous presence on so many threads. It is the humble acceptance of all and the refusal to criticize any. Those qualities set you apart and make you a most valuable member of the team. But then you know that.

Andy looks like you were having one of those days. I wonder what 1/2 would have done? And just to back up Andy's thoughts Steve there is no one else here deserving legendary status than you sir.

Bret

WW1/2CD? Very good question. First off he would not have gotten himself into this situation. All winter when I was lollygagging about I could have put new tires on the sprayer and fixed the worn out mounting for the control manifold mast. Problem does not happen if you prepare in advance, 1/2 way. Now, let's suppose he gets into the fix of having 280 gallons of herbicide mix in the tank, which really should not be dumped, and if left overnight, might not be effectively sprayed the next day. He probably would have run to town and bought a 14" tire (a new one will last me a lifetime, at this age) instead of recycling a well worn one saved for who-knows-what. And he would have had his spare tires sorted by size (I probably do have a 14" in the stack but really was frustrated and didn't want to dig through forty tires).

attachment.php

The stash has grown since this old picture.

Would 1/2 Cup put washers under an ill fitting wheel just to get it on the road?:lol_hitti I think we all know the answer to that.:lol_hitti:lol_hitti

Legendary, I like that, Steve.

Andy you are 100% right about what Steve would do of course! However, if you REALLY considered taking the High Road, and becoming a disciple, I do believe your head would explode, and end up looking like that tractor tire! What's the real lesson here? No matter how much makeup WE put on a scarecrow she will never be queen of the Ball; spend some MONEY! (The previous announcement was not intended to hurt or degrade anyone in any way. It is simply an observation made by an old man who is struggling to kick his own can{pun intended}down the road.) Where do I get my WW1/2Cup do bracelet? Just kidding Steve! Keep setting a good example! No Pressure, No Pressure...........Sort of like Andy's tire.........OK, OK, I guess I could spare some air!

good to see you have room and board with your apprentice program and does that mean there is a cot in the caboose?

good to hear your grandson finished high school (at home?) and he's headed to college. looks like he's been eating good and did he get a football scholarship?

I spy what appears to me to be some of those old Pontiac trans am wheels? Might be worth more to a Pony guy. Not that YOU would ever consider melting them down to make a umbrella bracket or something. But just sayin. Maybe they'd look cool on a farmal!

I think.:headscrat

Hmmm, maybe not.:wtf:

Did you slide a kind insult in while I wasn't looking?:(

I'll show you who's queen of the ball when I get my sphere turner operating... :bounce:

****, did I call myself a queen? Now I'm getting confused.

You're right, I'm not in 1/2 Cup's class. But that sounds like a good idea, I'll make some WW1/2CD bracelets. Limited edition, of course.:lol_hitti

Handy: i'm still laughing about the way you measure wind in INCHES!!:bowdown::bowdown::bowdown:

You made me do it. :)

nice fix on the sprayer's filter and tire so you could keep on truckin out in your field.

Thanks! It's part of trying to farm, farmers get a bad reputation for patching things up but you just can't take time to go to town and buy parts and expect to get much done.

What girl's name is on those clamps cause I think i missed that or I'm missing your humor (AGAIN)?

Since it is easy to stamp on the foam before casting, I put the pharmacist's four kid's names and the four employees names and a few others one to a clamp. Not all clamps are marked, but I think it will be fun for them to see their names cast into the shelf brackets.

good to see you have room and board with your apprentice program and does that mean there is a cot in the caboose?

No cot in the caboose, if you expect to pass the apprenticeship requirements you'd better be a little tough.:spit:

good to hear your grandson finished high school (at home?) and he's headed to college. looks like he's been eating good and did he get a football scholarship?

He is a good eater. He is also big enough to play football but gave up when he was young. He just didn't like being rough with other people, he was afraid he would hurt somebody. (his shoe size kept up with his age for a few years) He is a kind, considerate, sensitive man who will do very well in this life. I couldn't be more proud of him.

have a great day (BTW what day is it?)

cheers

It's SATURDAY!!!

I spy what appears to me to be some of those old Pontiac trans am wheels? Might be worth more to a Pony guy. Not that YOU would ever consider melting them down to make a umbrella bracket or something. But just sayin. Maybe they'd look cool on a farmal!

See ya soon.

I've got four TransAm rims. I posted them a couple of years ago and learned there is not much value there. They eventually could get melted but I would hate to do that.

They would look good on a farm trailer.:headscrat

Just let me know and come on out! Free ice cold Cokes!!

Andy, Great news on the grandson graduation and future plans. Looks like you have a real stack of work to finish.

Dwight

Thanks! All my life I have planned and prepared so I would never be bored, and I am happy to report I'm a success!

Ok, I’ve got a plan. You can start casting and selling WW1/2CD bracelets to buy new tires. Where do I send the check?

Good plan. Bobby suggested the same thing, why not? It should be easy to profit off of 1/2 Cup's celebrity status.

You don't think he'd want a cut, do you?

Well, I could lie to him about how much I'm charging, save some money that way. Just don't let on...

Smooth and sweet, aren't all Internationals??

Especially the gassers.

Smooth and sweet. I've had that one a long time and I've worked it hard for many long hours. I've been so eat up with foundry work I hadn't started it in a year. Fired right up (with the blue car's battery) on the old gas. I expected nothing less. Had a friend tell me it was missing. So I made a video of starting in road gear. With it's age and wear the spark bounces around a little until it is time to get down and pull then it smooths out and pulls like a champ. If I get the chance I'll post it on YouTube if you're interested.

It was cool this morning so I got out early and made a trivet and a hammer. Nothing like the roar of a propane burner melting aluminum in the morning. I've been having trouble with my trivet pattern, it's on a match plate and the sand sticks in the letters. I was tapping the match plate before withdrawal trying to settle the sand with limited results when I read about dropping the whole flask to settle it away from the pattern. Wow, this looks a lot better!

When I started machining the clamps I hit a little snag. I had made the lower piece too high to fit into the upper. Here I am cutting 2-1/2 mm off the lower piece. Only 22 to go!!

Because the foam pieces were hand cut they are all a little different. Once I drill holes I don't expect pieces to interchange so I marked each pair. Pair Number 18.

That went pretty quickly so I started drilling them. I stacked pairs to drill, and stuck a bolt in the first hole when drilling the second hole so things couldn't move around.

Drilling is going quick. Got over half done in less than an hour.

That's the trivet and hammer I poured this morning. Haven't cut the sprues off yet, but they came out good. That's for my pharmacist. You give gifts to your pharmacist, don't you?

Next step after drilling is to space the two halves apart and bore a hole through each pair. Then when you take the spacer out the bolts can clamp the bracket firmly to the pipe frame.

Thanks for dropping in!!
