I know that here at least if a cow is loose and I hit it the rancher/farmer isn't liable it is treated like any other wild animal. So if cows wonder into an open gate and become stuck is it finders keepers? Or do you still get hanged for cattle rustlin'?

Great to hear from you Andy, I've really missed your regular posts on here.

Thanks! I've got a new container of prunes so maybe I'll be a little more regular.

Yes, Oklahoma is still an open range state. It is the driver's responsibility to avoid livestock on the highway.

It is permissible to corral loose livestock for the owner, however. I have reported them to the sheriff's office and called neighbors with no results. You are entitled to compensation for care and feeding. That amount is arbitrary and can be based on whether the owner is appreciative or irritated when they come for their livestock. I have seen people accused of stealing cattle they were penning for safe keeping. These are pretty sorry cattle so the owner is likely to be pretty sorry too. I'm ready.:bounce:

Back to last fall! I've got a lot of updating to do.:bounce:

A week after Sharon passed away I decided we wanted a better marker than the little funeral home sign, until we could get a headstone. So I decided to make a wooden cross. Figured it would last a few months.

attachment.php

Thought I'd save making one A, but now it's not centered. I like it though.

attachment.php

After a month it had not fallen over.

attachment.php

Then another month we added some flowers.

attachment.php

And I decorated for Christmas. She had a collection of snowmen which nobody wants so I thought one could spend Christmas brightening the grave site.

attachment.php

Being a farmer, I planted my ground.

attachment.php

And fertilized. By March 10 it was needing to be mowed.

attachment.php

Sharon loved green grass so it seems appropriate to keep the area nice. The cemetery will start mowing soon so I won't have to. This was annual rye grass. I'll decide this fall what to plant. Maybe some fescue.

Thanks for sharing this with me last year Andy.

Reminding me again, same sentiment.

I love it and Sharon would have approved, especially being close to her Snowman.

Happy belated Andy. Good to see you back.

Thanks! Maybe I am back.:lol_hitti

I started traveling a little last September. Passed this old gate south of Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

Then I went back to Fairview to make brooms for the first time in several years. Hardly anybody there but these kids had fun helping.

The place was almost empty. There's the little boy with his mom. She was very nice to me.

I would ask if you are going to Pawnee this year but I suspect it is canceled. I have made the quilt show in Fairview ( mother grew up in that area ) but not the steam show. Would have loved to see the demonstration

Mum was nice to you?

What did you do that was that special?

LOVE THAT HAT ANDY !!

Nice gate.

She was very nice to me. I don't know what I did, teach her kids and teach her? I'm thinking if I were younger...

Actually she's a friend's wife, they came out to see me.

Umm, the hat. It is Oklahoma.

Great to see you posting Andy.
Pete

Thanks, Pete! It feels good but I'm way behind.

Dwight

I suspect it is cancelled. Of course you get a free demonstration if you come to Terlton. And probably a free lunch. If you're not picky. A free broom for anyone who can find Terlton.

On October 1 last year I took a little trip to get away. Went to Roman Nose State Park in Oklahoma.

attachment.php

When I was in high school we drove out to Roman Nose a few times. Just kids. There was a waterfall that came out of the side of a hill. Very unusual for Oklahoma. One trip I climbed up the waterfall to find a cavern behind it. Following the cavern the roof sloped down and we could only go about 50 ft before there was not enough room to breathe. The floor was sand. In the sand I found an old knife. I've got it some place unless it burned up in my shop fire.

In any event, I couldn't find the waterfall. After much searching I did find it, but in the 55 years since I had been there it had eaten back into the bank about 15 feet.

attachment.php

Traveling around Oklahoma that day we came across an unusual underpass under a railroad.

attachment.php

Anybody know where this is?

End to a marvelous day.

attachment.php

My son had a business associate in Iowa who had bought a car he couldn't retrieve. He talked me into buying it. :headscrat

On the way we stopped in Kansas City at the Arabia Museum. The steamship Arabia hung on a snag 5 miles upstream of Kansas City on September 5, 1856 and sank after everyone got off safely. Remaining onboard was 200 tons of cargo including complete supplies for 50 hardware stores in the new Dakota Territory. The vessel sank quickly into the silt bottom with the water washing silt under it until it was out of sight. The cargo sat covered in silt over 130 years until a team of novices excavated it in a corn field far from the river in 1988.

The interesting thing about the museum is that everything in the museum is from the ship, a time capsule of September 1856. Here's a couple of shots of hardware. Remember 1856, before modern manufacturing. Of course there were dishes, foodstuffs (ketchup in bottles) and lots and lots of tools. 50 hardware stores to be initiated from the cargo.

Very well worth your time to stop at the museum. It is incredible.

Finally got to the "barn find":lol_hitti

Andy, I was beginning to wonder if we were ever going to see you again without going thru an interpreter, middle man, kind person who just does this sort of thing, etc. And then all of of a sudden you post four times in one post. What a relief.

Yes!, I do know where Terlton is and I hope to get to see you sometime soon. Maybe this summer for a much belated broom making lesson.

That railroad overpass is cool. Never knew about that one. Maybe soon I will find out the secret location.

I have no skills, no patience, and no money. Seemed like a perfect project for me. If I never touch it it's still a worthwhile project.

So much to unwrap in 2 posts,
4 posts in one is one of the very funniest jokes in the world, to a very narrow sliver, and I think they are all here. It's like in the Alfa Romeo world there is a joke about a famous alfa mechanic, but working on a the mechanical fuel injection of a british leyland engine. Passerbys asked if he was working on an alfa romeo.
He says, "No SPICA, English!" You had to be there, and I wasn't, (spica is an italian acronym for a mechanical fuel injection system and is pronounced speeka)
I really want to go to Roman Nose State Park and the Arabia museum, glad you found your waterfall! Named for Chief Henry Roman Nose who died there in 1917, so much to learn,

Ummm, we're in the same state.:lol_hitti

Come anytime!

Back to Iowa! We winched the 30 Chevrolet into my car carrying trailer. Three of the tires aired up.:bounce:

attachment.php

This is the original owner's grandson. He had sold the car to my son's acquaintance. It had been in his shed for many years.

attachment.php

He was happy it was going to a good home. He doesn't know me.:lol_hitti:lol_hitti

attachment.php

Back in Oklahoma my new adopted grandson decided he wanted to do some forging. We made him a knife at my son's house.

attachment.php

He was very pleased with the results and hopefully will finish it.

I have an admission to make. My old laptop I used to post pictures from won't boot up. I keep working with it but to no avail. I had tried Windows 10 but was very unhappy with the results. That is the main reason I've been so long in posting, no suitable computer. Well this week I decided I had to learn how to struggle through with Windows 10. I have figured it out and am embarrassed to say I think it's easier...

Hmmm, if you found four posts in one to be humorous I think you need therapy. I highly recommend you see my personal therapist, Bob Heine. Ignore the fact people claim he is my brother, mom always denied it.

"No, spica English" is very funny. And I thought you were going to tell about the bull chasing the cow into the alfalfa, he was an alfa Romeo.

Henry Roman Nose had the land as his allotment and lived there for several years. And, as you pointed out, died there.

I encourage each one to visit the Arabia Museum. It is well worth the trip and you can sample barbeque while in K.C. They've got some crazy looking women there, but I didn't get me one.

Morning Andy

Glad to see you out and about, I have found travelling soothes the mind, but not the organisation or packing so much. :lol_hitti
Our trip to Colorado was obviously binned, I’ll let you know when/ where next years conference is, hopefully somewhere close by (ish).
The hardware museum looks just like something I’d love , the rest of the family
would have to be dragged in shouting and screaming, but I’d do it.

Very belated very happy birthday wishes to you.

Stay safe

Hi Steve!!

I'm sure your wife would like seeing the museum, lots of Wedgewood China, kitchenware and glassware. Interestingly they packed breakables in casks filled with coffee beans or rice. The packing material was then salable.

attachment.php

Amazing to me how so many things have not changed. Remembering they have added nothing to what came from the ship other than display stands. Most of the wood survived. Cotton disappeared leaving thread and buttons. They have some nice rubber boots which until this ship was excavated were thought to have not been invented yet.

attachment.php

I thought the fancy curved spur bits were a relatively new thing.:lol_hitti

Great to see you back Andy. I guess trying to keep up with your thread is back on my to-do list.

Mike

Thanks, Mike! I hope it's not a burden.:bounce:

The 32 Chevy will need seat covers.

But the dash is pretty clean. Unfortunately the speedometer only goes to 80 mph. The temperature gauge does show the boiling point of alcohol if you choose to pay to put alcohol in the system instead of merely draining the water in cold weather. It was very common to drain engines and avoid the extra cost. Water was pretty cheap back then.

Andy and other, The SteamShip Arabia Museum is amazing. Possibly one of the best things to see in KC, and many overlook it for shopping or other museums. Its worth every penny and the condition of the artifacts is unbelievable. The story of finding and excavating it (for an equipment lover like myself) is astounding. Years to dig it all out, and it wasn't just poking out of the ground with the cornstalks, it was waaaaay down there. The site looked like a strip mine while they were working there.

I too am glad to see you back Andy. You look to be doing well. Next time you come to Iowa, be sure to post about it beforehand so I know where to meet you!

The museum is amazing. Even more amazing, is they excavated and removed everything in four months one winter so the farmer could do his spring planting. They are only half done cleaning up artifacts after almost 20 years, however.

Thanks for stopping by! I was traveling up and back with family. I'll try to post next time I come your way.

Pioneer woman statue, Ponca City, Oklahoma.

Friend Andy sent this very topical warning to all who pass it.

I have driven past it a few times before COVID 19.

In other news, Our friend Dennis delivered his 66 C10 NASCAR truck yesterday to the race Car prep shop, for the roll cage to be fully welded in.

Based on one of these.......

The guys were blown away of course, Dennis being who he is, had never told them he was building this mad thing.

The motor he has fitted was Dyno tested at 850bhp

Looking forward to this coming together.

We laughed at and enjoyed the Pioneer Woman statue.

On the way for a short visit with JB. He's doing fine.

A little more progress through last fall:

JBLnut sent me this broken handle for repair. I haven't forgotten!

attachment.php

Then I helped an important team make jack-o-lanterns.

And took a selfie during a casting session.

Little did I dream I was actually anticipating dressing for Walmart.:lol_hitti

Took a little trip to Eastern Oklahoma, this was downstream of the Tenkiller Dam. Water was up.

That's all for tonight!

Cute kids and a great way to spend time with them.
So you wear that set up when you’re casting spells on people?

Yeah Shorty. I have casting spells where I go melt metal. And then when I misspell a word on a pattern I miscast a casting spell.

I started walking late October. Using MapMyWalk I'm up a little over 200 miles. Usually do a 4 mile walk. Lake Keystone.

I did make pies again for Thanksgiving.

Hershey likes to sit on my foot when I stop. I think she misses Sharon. When I let her in the house she lays in front of Sharon's chair.

My son and new grandson came up to hunt deer. We ate at McDonald's. With a little encouragement I was willing to try to embarrass him. He is very image conscious.

My son, however, is the real style maven. He finds a Happy Meal box to fit well and gives him a sense of pride.

I'm so proud. No false pride in that boy.

I have a friend who was looking for a bench for her kids at the dining table. I offered to make one so started with oak lumber I had cut on the farm and has dried for twenty years. It's not prime lumber...

Hurrying home from walking one evening I came upon a wreck which had just happened. The guy was unhurt, said he went to sleep and ran off the road (left in the picture), woke up, overcorrected, and got it stopped safely. He is trying to crawl out the bottom.

When I got there it had just happened and a couple were picking up tools. I asked if anyone was hurt and they said no, just trying to save the guys tools. I took a couple of pictures for the police when I heard a voice from inside the truck! He was still in it trying to crawl out the bottom. Hmmm, I thought picking up tools might be second priority. The door on top was jambed, he couldn't get out the bottom, so I crawled up on top of the truck and pried open that door so he could crawl out. He was OK. Then I drove past the debris as the police were arriving.

Don't drive too fast on country roads!

Andy - I will just assume I'm luck that I got two replies to my last post! Keep on posting and I will continue to set aside time to keep up with this fast moving thread.

Good gosh Andy is back and busy as ever! Love all your trips. Definitely got some nice spots around you. Never fun arriving at an accident scene like that. Guy was definitely lucky. Cops would normally just take out the windscreen in that scenario.

The cross you made came out nice and is a very nice touch. So nice that the lettering worked out so!

That story about the ship and the museum is definitely interesting. First surprised so much stuff survived. Probably owing to care taken to package it and sinking in fresh water. Some really interesting stuff too. Looking at how the pickaxe heads had their stave hole forge welded in two pieces rather than hot punched. The spiral wood augers are also amazing for that time. Thinking they were hot forged perhaps?

Windows10 isn't so bad. Having to deal with Apple and Chromebook incompatibilities while supporting home schooling is an almost full time job in itself.

Good to see you back in full swing Andy. Stay safe out there!
