I have a truck cap and the clear coat is flaking off, what can I use to remove ALL the rest of the remaining clear coat so I can paint the cap the same as my truck. Thinner or paint remover ????????? thanks Bob

You may have an issue with the paint remover eating away at the fiberglass (I don't know that it would, but that's the first thing that popped into my head).

My truck cap for my 92 is a different color than my truck, and when I get around to painting both I am going to opt for the safer (if more time consuming) method of sanding the clear coat off.

Grey scotch brite works well to take it off. Also, check out automotivetouchup.com, they have all the paint codes. I would also recommend the 2K clear over their brand, I have to redo a spot on my truck. The 2K clear is pretty hard.

Sometimes a razor blade does the trick. But you better be damned good at using one or your shell will be slam full of gouges. If it's just the top peeling, pressure wash, the DA sand the **** out of it with 80 grit to remove as much of the old paint as you can. Try to get back down to factory primer, then switch over to 220 and keep sanding. When the chap primer they applied is thin enough to see through, or off all the way, use some quality Epoxy primer as a base. 24-48 hrs later, 2K primer then start the prep with block sanding.
I recommend SPI paints.

Feather it out with what works I.E. 180 220 320 Less is best. If it don't feather than strip it all off with one of what's mentioned above.

Seal it with what you choose I E epoxy 2k urethane or laquer then repaint.

What I've done in the past to remove peeling clear coat is use Gorilla black tape, any good grade duct will work also. Remove as much clear coat as you can, follow up feather edging the remaining clear coat.

I've seen so many vehicles with peeling clear coat. I'm not a professional body man but I never understood the reason for the base coat/clear coat process. It's more complicated and twice the work of single stage urethane with the same results IMO and then there is the possibility of adhesion problems. I've never seen a single stage urethane paint peel like clear coat does. It can fade, get dull and wear away after years in the sun but I've never seen it just peel off.

Sand it, there is no easy way to remove clear coat from fibreglass. A few hours working like you trying to impress the boss and you will be done.

Single stage is a different look, no comparison on depth or gloss either.
