I have a section of the Berlin wall that I've recently planted in my back yard (my wife is happy it's out of the garage). I'm looking to coat it to provide some protection from the elements. I have some concerns about adhesion since I can't do anything aggressive to prep the surface. I'm also wondering how well the epoxy coatings work on vertical surfaces.

I've been looking at the Wolverine bondtite 1101 coating and am looking for any comments or recommendations.

Thanks

Kris

Here is a picture to get a better idea of what I'm trying to deal with.

Thanks

Kris

I wouldn't use Bondtite 1101 outside. I've just put down some of Wolverines Endurashield (water clear) which is rated for outside usage and is really nice to apply. Talk to Fred (alphagarage) on this forum as he'd have some good recommendations for Wolverine products.

FFPL is right, BondTite 1101 is not the best option.

How well is the existing paint and other coatings adhering to the wall substrate? It looks like it's sticking well, any of it flaking off?

Believe it or not... this isn't the first time we have coated a piece of the Berlin Wall. We have alot of options, but the best option is using EnduraShield 2254. This is a 90% solids 2-Part Polyurethane that has excellent UV stability and EXTREME abrasion resistance. In other words, it'll work outside and it's TOUGH STUFF! You may want to do a very small test area to make sure it doesn't lift any of the paint that is already on there... but... I suspect it will be just fine. Then, I'd do multiple coats if it were me. I mean, it's not like you're going to just get another piece of it later on. The EnduraShield 2254 will also protect it from Acid Rain... animal piss... etc... See Fred @ AlphaGarage...

OH... the first time we coated a section of the Berlin Wall it was done with one of our Aircraft grade urethanes... EnduraShield 2253 which is MUCH more expensive at about $350 per gallon... The EndurShield 2254 is much less expensive and although it won't take extreme rapid altitude changes or ice hitting it at 850 mph... it should do just fine unless you decide to strap it to a rocket and launch it toward China. * Let me know if you decide to do that, I've got some other stuff to add to the rocket!

I just spent my weekend applying this stuff (Endurashield 2254) for my neighbor and it's really amazing stuff. Wish I used it on my own project. Wait till I tell my neighbor that there was a more expensive option. He probably would have gone for that as well.

Thanks for the replies.

The front surface the paint looks good, not much if any is flaking off, but the back is a different matter. The back (had been painted white) is flaking quite a bit.

I'll contact Fred about the EnduraShield 2254.

What a unique reminder from an amazing period of history. I was working in news at the time and can remember the bizarre sense of disbelief as video of the fall of the wall came in. The wall was something that simply was - like the oceans and mountains - but there it was no more, destroyed before our eyes.

The less expensive EnduraShield will do a great job. Please post a couple of pics after it's coated!

Thanks for your help Fred. If the weather holds I'll be able to get it applied this weekend.

I'll post pictures when completed.

My schedule cleared and the weather cooperated so I finally got the epoxy on the wall section. I’m quite happy with the results, it should help to protect the graffiti and concrete from the elements for years to come.

Still have some landscaping to complete before the project is done, but here are the promised pictures.

Looks sweet! Please remember to update this when you've landscaped the area.

In the meantime I've set a reminder in our calendar to check back in 2023 to make certain the EnduraShield is still holding up.
