I was going to use Quikrete clear epoxy over my VCT installation (copying what a few others have done), but when I went to Lowes they didn't have it, and told me they no longer carry it.

What is a durable clearcoat option for VCT? I want to use non-slip additive, so I want a don't want to use wax.

Wolverine has had quite a few requests for a VCT clear coat, both from the commercial contractors and the DIY market. At first we just recommended BondTite 1101 - our 100% solids, 2 part clear epoxy for the task. It worked well, but like all epoxies it yellows due to UV light, plus it's formulated for concrete and some metals. Due to the demand they developed BondTite 1107, it has increased UV resistance and adheres better specifically to VCT. Since then they've made even more improvements and we now have BondTite 1109 just for VCT application.

It's a very durable epoxy, and you can add grit to it. For an even more durable coating, with increased UV resistance, you can apply a layer of EnduraShield 2254 polyurethane clear coat.

Figure about 5 mils of BondTite 1109 for typical applications (210 ft2 per 3 quart kit; 850 ft2 per 3 gallon kit), more for heavy use environments.

Bondtite 1109 is not on your website but I am interested in using it once I put down the black and white VCT tiles. How much is it per Gallon. I guess I need 3 gallons and 3 quarts.

BondTite 1109 is $75 per 3 quart kit, and $225 per 5 gallon kit. The EnduraShield 2254 clear coat is $195 per 1.25 gallon kit (up to 500 ft2).

Fred, tell us more about 1109 (how much will 5g cover, how UV resistant is it, compared to other clear epoxy's, etc.) I looked at Endurasheild, but makes VCT a pretty expensive solution. That said, which of the two would be more durable in a garage that sees some work: Reasonably careful and fairly infrequent welding, lots of melting snow and mag chloride, the usual automotive spills, floor jacks, etc.

EnduraShield 2254 is a very hard and durable clear coat, but it doesn’t adhere well to anything other than epoxy (likewise other things don’t stick well to it – which is why it’s resistant to most chemicals and why it’s easy to clean). Fortunately it does adheres real well to BondTite 1109, and BondTite 1109 adhere very well to VCT. Together they make for an extremely solid, durable, and easy to maintain solution. Much stronger and easier than periodic stripping/waxing. A 1.25 gallon kit is good for up to 500 ft2.

BondTite 1109 is more UV resistant than most other epoxies, but not 100%. You can use it by itself, it will give a nice clear protective coating that doesn't need waxing. It resists most chemicals, so it's easy to keep clean. It won't handle weld splatter closer than 3 feet. The depth you'll want depends a bit on the punishment factor, minimum is 5 mils (290 ft2 per gallon), and for shop use I'd go to 10 mils (145 ft2 per gallon).

Sorry to bust in on this conversation But I have a question in regards. Do you need to sand or scuff the vct before putting down the bondtite 1109? Any other special prep needed?

Thanks!

Has anyone tested clear polyurea over VCT? I am also curious if the g-floor top coat which is a urethane formulated to stick to PVC would work. I don't sell vct so just putting it out there.

What is the application procedure for this stuff? how long do you need to let the glue for the VCT off-gas after it's installation before applying this top coat?

Thanks.

What's the thought on the VCT flexing or deforming? Will the epoxy crack or seperate from the VCT?
