In my well documented electrical disaster of losing our neutral at the house, one of the issues was replacing the outdoor lighting that was fried. The electrician used mostly 30 watt floods or spots around the house plus one 60 watt wall washer. They all have worked out very well as they are all pretty high on the house, 20-30 feet above the ground. On the garage side of the house, not so much height. One of the lights is about 9' above the driveway.

Both the 30 watt spot & flood are way too blinding to have them at that height. So, what to do? The electrician tried to find a light with a opaque or otherwise diffuse diffuser. No love. He came up with a great idea. He took the clear glass diffuser off the light and back to the shop where he sand blasted the inside. It turned out to be the perfect solution.

With leds becoming the rage, you might want to keep this one in your bag of tricks.
