Here's a shot of the wall I built for the kids a few years ago. I'm posting it now cause I'm taking it down to finish and remodel the whole garage and this is the last chance to show it. The kids thought it was really cool for a while but they got into other things and out of climbing. We now have a really good climbing gym right around the corner and I want the space for gladiator cabinets :bounce:

Are you looking for a good home for all of the hand and foot holds and anchors to go to?

Nice. I had a 14' wall in the back yard growing up. Fun stuff.

Not mine, but I wish it were:

I've got no experience with that sort of thing -- but do you put down any kind of padding when kids are suspended up there over the slab?

They make special pads you can put under the kids. Or use an old mattress. Or consider it a good time for them to start to toughen up and don't use anything :lol_hitti

I've already sold the whole wall with holds and hardware. But thanks.

Any chance you could give a hint as the best place to buy the hand grips , anchors, or the "hardware" for such a wall??

I am aware of Google, but I was curious cause you had SO MANY...

Thanks,

-T

Cool, thanks for posting this. I told the wife that when I finish the 2nd story of the barn, I want to do a climbing cave for the kids up there. She thought I was crazy. So now I can show her I'm not the only crazy one :)

I built one about 15 years ago under the deck of our old house. Not quite that nice. I need to get back in shape so I can get back to rock climbing.

The holds generally come with the one bolt and one t-nut. You only need 1 bolt per hold obviously but you need a heck of a lot of t-nuts to make the wall modular. At first, I bought a few of the extra t-nuts at the climbing supply sites or big box stores but they were incredibly expensive. So, I went to Fastenal and they were like 1/5th the price or even less--I can't remember now.

Here's the fastenal link:

The holds I found from local stores and online supplies. Here's one of the cheaper ones:

Here's one of the better companies in the industry with high quality holds:

Here's a guide to building your own wall:

My recommendation on the holds is to try to find local suppliers (secondhand or whatever). If you are going to buy new, order the large kits--the bigger the better. You get a better discount, sort of like large toolkits. My holds are a mix of whatever I could find on sale. You can contact local climbing gyms and see if they are getting rid of any holds. They hold up to a lot of use and you can clearly see if they are cracked or damaged.

Don't feel like you have to buy all the holds at one time. You can always add more as you find a set on sale. But, make sure you drill more holes than you think you need and put the t-nuts in them. Once the panels are flush with the wall, you can't get behind it anymore to add new ones.

For the padding, I just used an old mattress. If you are going to do something a little more permanent, like in a barn like rieferman mentioned, I'd get a bunch of old tires and have them put through a shredder and lay it about 6-8" thick at the base of all the walls and under any overhangs. Many of the climbing gyms have that sort of padding.

I would keep the wall up if I had more room. It's really awesome for the kids to play on and they can do it all year round. It's just that I have a 2 1/2 car garage and I need the space for storage and working on stuff so the kids get bumped out of this space :) They've bumped me out of the rest of the house it seems like, so I don't feel bad about this and their interest has waned over the years. But the rest of the kids in the neighborhood think it is the coolest thing they've ever seen.

The schools around us in Champaign, IL, are putting in climbing walls for use during PE classes. Harnesses are used during climbing and I think they only put down tumbling mats on the floor. Sorry excuse for good exercise, if you ask me. Most of the 30 minutes are spent watching those who have time (or want) to get in the harness and up/down the wall. Fun for home - beats the backyard trampoline which caused many unnecessary accidents.

I can’t believe there is even a thread like this already on here!

So at one point I was an avid climber out in Nor Cali. Lots of gyms and natural places to go climb, in Ohio where I now live not so much. I would like to start again so I thought build one in my garage. But I have a dilemma. The wall where I want to build a climbing wall has already been finished, ie plywood hung, calked and painted.

I know how you would build a wall from the start, drilling the holes and installing the mounting brackets from behind then hanging the wall.

But how would you go about it if the wall was already hung? I have been trying to think of away but can’t really come up with anything. Other then maybe using 2” screws right through the holds. The main problem with that is it doesn’t allow for any changeability.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I built my wall off the pre-existing wall so I have storage behind it and then the new wall with all the pre-drilled holes so you can move the rocks around.

It's been a while since I've been here.

@Kevin54 Holy Balls where is that!?! It has to be every bit of 80 feet tall? I bet setting routes on that thing is a B.

**EDIT**
2 minutes on Google and I found it.

Groningen, Netherlands, has been described as “flat as a pancake” which leaves climbers with nothing to climb outdoors . . . that is until the massive climbing tower Excalibur was built. Klimcentrum Bjoeks is considered one the best Dutch Climbing Centers. It has a boulder area both outside and inside, as well as 18 meters (59 feet) high indoor climbing walls for route climbing. Outside Bjoeks looms the mighty Excalibur, a spectacular and curved climbing tower that is over 121 feet high (37 meters) to reach the thrilling peak. The overhang curves 36 feet out from the base and offers numerous routes up, from the slabby side, to the “steep” side that requires some thought and climbing muscle. Being adrenaline rush fans, we thought it looked pretty cool. Even if it’s not made by nature . . . climbing to the top would allow adventurers, adrenaline junkies and extreme sport participants to see for miles. It would surely feel as if you reached the summit of Dutch mountain

That is Nucking Futs:eyecrazy:
