I have a new style toilet that seems to be clogged. None of the plungers I have found are big enough to cover the drain opening. Has anyone found something that works.

While the toilet is not in the garage, fighting this $#%$ thing is keeping me from doing anything out there.

depends where & what the clog is.
if it's a toy, or something bulky and smooth you won't have a lot of luck with snake , best would be take off the toilet & try to get it out by turning the toilet upside down, shake it etc .
plugged toilets can be a pain.
if it is plugged from paper etc an auger would work,
I've even fished a rope thru the toilet with a rag tied into it and work it back and forth to get the obstruction out.
a plunger isint really going to help you, IMO

I did get a hair brush out with my auger. I had the tip altered into an open spring that would screw itself into the clog. As purchased the tip was wound too tight. Before i modified it the auger tip would drill thru but not grip the clog.

Like I said originally... you really need to know how inventive my family is with ****.

The Rigid auger from HD that you attach a cordless drill to works great.

I have three daughters...trust me...it works.

I use the ********* plunger from Home Depot. Make sure the water level is covering the plunger or you're just pushing air. Our customers constantly plug our toilet, this works well. Worst case scenario is you need a toilet auger or to remove the toilet. I've found brushes and pens in there. They won't flush through and prevent the toilet from flushing.

Out toilets seem to have a 90 degree turn before going down to the drain. I can not get the auger to go around the bend. I'm to the point in my life I only do the repairs I want to not all the one I can. I'll have a pro come in the first of the week and take care of it.

We had trouble with a newer low water flush toilet and it would never flash without incident. I finally removed 5he toilet and ...wa la..... The waxed ring, with the rubber throat had shifted upon installation and was clogging the drain. Replaced....works really well now!

The power auger I mentioned earlier really helps with this. You can hold the nose of the tool right down in the bowl and just hold the drill switch, forces it right past the trap, or whatever you have beyond it.

Kohler toilets are not plunger friendly. They are designed in such a way that the plunger does not seal well, someone needs to make a larger plunger correct that issue.

As mentioned previously... my family... "The Clogzillas"... I got in trouble one time they came to visit for a weekend. I issued the biggest clogger… a plunger and machette at the door when SHE arrived. Pretty sure everybody thought it was funny... but nobody outwardly laughed...

Get a closet auger. They are the best thing for clogged crappers.

I second the closet auger... I have Clogzilla family members that visit.

I saw those on the web and wonder if they really worked. I think I will order one for future problems. We plan to be in the house until they take us out in a pine box.

We had a problem with a "new style" toilet that kept clogging. It was a bad toilet. Had a plumber come out and that was his diagnosis. Went to the Home Depot and got one of those American Standard (almost) clog proof toilets. (Remember the commercial where the kid dumped in a dozen golf balls and the toilet didn't clog - that one.)

That one gets my vote. I think maybe 2 clogs in 6 years or so.

Chalk those up to my children.

I bought a Toto at the local ReStore for $25, it's not clog proof but does a decent job of making stuff go away.

I own a few rentals with several toilets each. I keep a closet auger in my van.
I use it more frequently than any of my plungers.

My favorite toilets are made by Gerber with the Sloan Flush Mates, they are not quiet but they are very effective.

I'm sorry, I'm not familer with rentals.

People actually call you if THEY clog the toilet?

As has been mentioned, you need to know what the clog is. If it is a toy or something similar, you are going to have to remove the toilet and somehow dig it out. You really need to remove the toilet and check further into it.

increase the water level works for me. I own this AS toilet and had to modify the flush valve and increase the water volume.

If you don't have flush valve issue, increasing the water volume should help to give a powerful flush.

In the amount of time you have spent trying to unclog it using shortcuts and reading all these posts, you could have already had the toilet off and making sure with the problem is.

The task is a lot easier if you pull the tank off.

Put some tape on the floor and the front of the bowl....mark the alignment....this removes the guesswork when you go to put it back on.

You could have something hung up on the wax seal. Wax seals are cheap....so don't try to reuse the old one.

One time one of my boys tried to flush a plastic frog down the toilet....only way to get it out was remove the toilet.

This is also a great time to just do a general inspection and clean up.

When I set a toilet bowl....I do the following:

1. Clean everything. If necessary, take the bowl outside and wash it.
2. Remove the old wax seal. Make sure the flange is at the right height. If installed properly, the flange should be on top of the floor. If recessed, you will need a deep wax ring.
3. After the bowl is dry, I flip it over and I run a 1/4" bead of silicone around the bottom....leaving a 2" gap at the back. I let this sit for about 30-45 min or until the surface of the silicone is not tacky.
4. I set the toilet. This is where the tape and alignment marks come in handy.
5. I snug it down. The Silicone acts like a gasket. Expect some of it to squeeze out. Do the usual wipe with your finger for a clean line.
6. Sit on it....but not real hard. Snug up those bolts.
7. Let it sit over night before sitting on it. The silicone 'gasket' will also reduce the chance of any rocking. You do NOT want it to rock. That will cause the wax seal to eventually leak.

That 2" gap at the back? It is a way for any 'leaks' to be detected early.

Things I have seen it toilets- toothbrush, hairbrush, combs, maxi pads, plastic bowl cleaner dots (the kind that are suppose to clean with every flush), toy boats, plastic army men, plastic airplanes, tooth past tubes, hot wheel cars, ****** memories.

I only had to do this once, but after a coat hanger failed to work I took the toilet off and put it into the bathtub. (It was a basement suite rental and no way was I going to carry a leaking toilet upstairs and out)

Couple lego, toy soldier, turds and paper pushed out from behind. Reinstalled toilet and let the renter clean up the mess in the tub. An hour at best.

And when you are pulling the toilet off, use a few "Puppy Pads" to absorb the inevitable sloshing:https://www.menards.com/main/pet-wildlife/dog-supplies/training-pads/master-paws-puppy-pads-30ct/70001/p-1444452557949.htm

Folded up, they also make a quick kneeling pad - then use 'em to clean-up.

I have a box of 'em on the plumbing shelves.

It is tips like this that make this place great!!

I would have never thought about using the puppy pads!!!

Excellent!

Freaking awesome tip. I also keep those puppy pads on the shelf for things like that.

Recently used one (they are 19"x19") on my table while using my oil sharpening stones... I use them in a pan too but it never fails... oil gets places... with the pads... boom catches drips... costs pennies... covers a nice area... can be used to wipe everything off at the end.

My only added advice is... make sure you are using the correct side of the pad.

Now THAT is Karma - I never thought about using the puppy pads under the sharpening stones. One good tip deserves another, I guess! Thank you!

The turn maybe the issue. My house came with constantly clogging toilets... turns out the original plumber had used short radius 90deg elbows improperly where he should have used the longer radius ones. Ultimately I ended up replacing the drain pipes to fix the issue.

Had similar issues with the stupid low flow toilets. Fixed the issue about 90% buy making sure the damn thing had enough water to operate.
