It's time to decide on overhead doors for the new garage build. There are two 9'W x 8'H and one 16'W x 8'H.

I have quotes from two different installers. One quoted Clopay and the other Haas. Both quotes include doors, hardware, LiftMaster 8500W, and installation. The prices are within $200 of each other so that's not really a differentiator. Both brands are 2" thick, both are insulated with polyurethane, both have a thermal break between panels. The Clopay technically has a higher R-value (R18.4 vs. 17.66) but those numbers appear to have little meaning in the real world.

Is there anything tangible that separates the two brands or should I just flip a coin and be done with it?

Toss up a coin and see which one gets the heads up. I have one Clopay door into my basement area and Haas doors on my garages. There's not much difference between them, but I do prefer the hinges on the Haas only because the hinge style has been around as long as I can remember.

Check out Hormann garage doors. I debated also with the two that you mentioned,...until one GJ member recommended this one. I love it, very well constructed and insulated.

I will never consider Haas again. We put two of their 800 series “commercial” 3” doors on a previous home. We ordered, waited several months’ lead time, and received the wrong style doors. It was freakin pulling teeth and multiple calls/followups to get them reordered, several months more waiting, then finally got the right door panels with the wrong hardware - 2” tracks and undersized extension springs not 3” and properly sized torsion. The dealer’s answer was to blame the factory, tell me I should’ve paid them the $4k quoted for installation of two doors, and they’d look into it....then started hanging up on my calls and ignoring emails. Messages then calls to Haas corporate had them blaming the dealer with no effort to get me the correct hardware so I finally did a bit of research, bought the correct hardware at Menards (Haas and Ideal use the same hardware supplier btw - China IIRC), and finished the job after ~6 months of dicking around with scumbags.

To add insult to injury, a couple months later my wife is carrying a big bundle of long handled tools into the garage and loses a shovel. It falls over, maybe a foot of travel and the round handle punctures the exterior garage door skin. I don’t recall the steel gage, but it’s ultra thin, butter soft, and their paint *****.

So yes, buyer beware. I never have issues with bad customer service but this one was enough for a lifetime.

I have Clopay doors, very happy with them. Bought them through HD, also have the same openers. I have had no issues with the doors other then for some reason the glass cracked on one of the doors. They sent replacement glass to my local HD and I installed it. Process was relatively pain less. They did deny it as warranty originally, so I'm not sure if glass is warrantied.

I have a Clopay door and liftmaster opener on my 2 car garage, my home builder chose them, I am not in a development I had a custom built home erected on my own land. 5 years in i called the installer to tune up the door as it was getting noisy. They came and adjusted it, perfect. 1 week later it is noisy again, I called back and they were out of business. I contacted another local company and they couldn't quiet the doors either, upon checking his books realized the original installer had installed the wrong spring coil and over adjusted them to compensate when they did the tune up. This guy installed the correct coil springs 4 months ago and things are still perfect. My house was built on my land by a builder of my choice, the guy that changed the springs says that in the numerous developments here the developers end up cutting corners by using cheaper springs he was amazed mine worked so good for the first 5 years.

I live in a warm climate and running the mini split cools or heats (on the rare occasion it gets cold) the garage even with a lightly insulated door.

I had bought 2 single garage doors for my attached garage. I bought the Clopay. When it was time to buy doors for my detached garage. I again bought Clopay. The doors purchased where the R18 similar to yours. So I guess you can say I am more than satisfied with the Clopay garage doors.

I have 2 Haas doors the 3 inch very happy with them. I think it is the same with many things the installer is more important than the brand.

I added a garage on my house in 2008 with a Clopay door. This door is absolute ****. Coming apart, sections bent and broken. Neighbor is getting a new Haas door. I'll see what that looks like, maybe have them install a new one for me. The wood door on my original garage, built in 1958, is in great shape, looks and operates great.

I have three Copley doors in my shop, and another three in my garage. They’ve been trouble free until this winter, when the bottom two panels of a 14’ shop door wide door buckled after snow slid down the steel roof (16’ eaves) and impacted it.

Not sure how common that is, or if it happens with other brands, but the dealer said he saw several failures like that this winter. He also said he has, on occasion, sold shipping damaged panels to tradesmen who use them as scaffold picks (planks).

I had installed two Clopay garage doors, look for the Miami-Dade County product approval doors, stronger construction, yes more expensive. I also got the Liftmaster bellcrank side of the door motor, and I don't have any issues with operation. My installer told me to lubricate all moving parts 2X/year, and doing that keeps the door quiet and functional, no issues. I use the garage door spray lube from the big box store.

“…anything tangible…?”

For the doors themselves- gauge of metal, warranty!

Beside those two-
Installer’s warranty, experience, and location (if emergency service is needed).

*I’m an Amarr fan. Have been spec’ing them for over 20yrs- never have had any problems with the doors. And that’s probably close to a thousand doors!

I am very pleased with my metal clad insulated Coplay door, I will specify them as my rentals need replacement doors.

I've had Clopay doors and Green Hinges since about the same time as the OP (2000 for me). Good doors and still holding up great.
