closet door lock

In side my office in my home, I have turned my closet into gun/mantopia. i installed two gun cabinets and some metal shelves. There is enough ammo and guns in that closet to start a small war.

I have two girls of my own and several nephews. I want to not only lock the gun cabinets but secure the closet doors to the children and make it harder for criminals to break into undetected. I would also like the closet to remain looking like a regular closet for the most part as to not invite undo attention from window spys. The doors are french style oak doors with the latch mechanism just being a push in style. I am going to switch the hinge assemblys out for industrial heavy units with welded pins.

I considered a keyed pad dead bolt and like the idea for my wife and I to have quick access with no key required. I dont like the idea that a large key pad will draw attention.

I keep several guns upstairs secured in our bedroom gun cabinet load for some protection. So I'm open to suggestions. I am considering to mounting a steel backer plate to the doors to further strength the doors. They are solid oak about 1 3/4 inch thick. I also keep jewelry and coins etc in there.

Put the keypad by the bedroom door/lightswitch. If she goes to lock the bedroom door, she can be opening the gun closet at the same time and it will look like a home security keypad over there. I can't help with securing the doors, sorry.

Edit, unless you do a magnetized security door with automatic popper.

yea i was thinking of recessing the key pad in the wall behind the family pic in the office. This is for my downstairs gun storage not the upstairs one.

Teach them about guns. You really need to be vigilant when a stray kid comes over.

who has experience here with electronic solenoids as i think two on the split in the two doors and one on the hinge side of each door would make a sweet locking door setup.

Any chance you can put another door just inside the existing closet door?
Look up door bolts for the hinge side of your doors.

Anything that dosn't look like the typical simple closet handle will draw attention.
I like the idea of seloniods driving pins at the top and bottom of the doors.
Maybe even battery powered, just in case.
There have been lots of ideas for a hidden switch.

You could use mag locks and they make ones with a split strike. The only issue is that you need a back up battery or they will open when power goes out.

Schlage makes the BE series electronic deadbolts or knobs and that would give you the best of both worlds.

Kaba (Simplex) make some good quality mechanical pushbutton locks. I'm in the lock business so I can point you to products to lock up anything.
