Salvaged some half pipes today and thought they need to be put to use.
Here is where it is at so far.

Got the other base pieces cut today and found a chunk of 4" pipe for a column.
Think I might mount this parker 674-1/2 on it.
Hope to finish it tomorrow.

+1 that is going to be an awesome vise stand when complete !!

Now IF you have scraps like that everywhere, I'm thinking "group build/buy" for GJ vise stands might be on your plate !! :D I'd sure take a couple !! ;)

You know that since crude price is down to $40 a barrel . . . .
. . . . . . might as well use all that steel pipe in Alaska for something !! :D

You should put a coke can or something like that next to everything for scale.

The mention of the pipe being 4" caught me off guard. It looks like 2" in the photo with nothing else there to reference for size.

Finished it up this morning
It's kind of odd looking, but that's alright by me.

Not odd, unique and distinctive comes to mind. Love it, what colour are you painting it?

Royce: another worthy contender for best looking vise stand on GJ. with that very stout Parker coachmaker's vise sitting on it you should post pictures over on the vise thread and at least one (more if you have time) on the vise stand thread in this section.

WELL DONE SIR!!!!

also just curious what tools you use to drill holes in your steel plate and how are you marking the holes for the vise mountings? are you cutting your metal with a plasma, acy/oxy or do tell?

always a pleasure to see what you have cooked up in your head that gets built very quickly.

cheers

drives,
Twist bit in the drill press for the holes,
Measure and mark with soapstone, then center punched,
The cloverleaf cut with bandsaw
The stantion cut with cold cut saw,
The plate cut with hand torch.

Thanks

Love the look of that cloverleaf stand and great use of scrap pipe Royce. Does the base of your stand have enough mass to hold the vise still in use as it has a nice footprint or are you planning to secure it to the floor? I also like that the shape will shed swarf off the base. Ed.

Thanks Ed,
I test cut a 2x4 with a handsaw and the mass in my opinion is a little light,
I put the ears on it in case it needed bolted down, but like the idea of being able to move it to where needed.
I guess I could fill the base with sand or mortar as another option.
Maybe I'll work it awhile and if it annoys me I'll do something about it.
I never thought about the swarf, good point.
