I'm building a Toyota 22R engine for my little '83 pickup and noticed something kinda funny on the timing set. It is a Cloyes timing set, the box says made in Japan, but the chain itself is stamped USA. I think they may be a bit confused...:dunno:

I love 2xR motors. I have a 20R/22R Hybrid in my 1980 Toyota Celica. I had a 1992 truck with a 22RE for a long time.

Have fun with the build!

Sprockets are USA as well:

I'll post some pics up when the build is done, it's nothing fancy though. My factory '83 block is toast so this build is an '87 engine I found with a bad valve. I put a new head on it and new stock cam, but it'll have a ****** header and Weber carb on it. The bores measured good and the pistons weren't bad at all so I just honed the bore, cleaned the pistons and put new rings and bearing in along with new timing set, water pump and oil pump.

I started off by running the block through the wash at work, cleaning oil passages, priming and painting then chasing all threads prior to assembly.

This reminds me of the urban legend going back to just after WW II.
Some town in Japan changed their name to "USA" so they could label all their stuff as "Made in USA"

Maybe the box was made in Japan? Those are nice little engines. I had a '86 Toyota, a '94 Toyota both with those in it. Then my sister used to have a '82 Corona sedan with that engine. Older brother had an '86 Toyota pickup with 450k miles on it.

I should put a 22R in my '87 Dodge Raider 4x4 that I inherited. It's a nice low mile rust-free rig, but the Mitsubishi 2.6 liter 4 cyl. engine in it only seems to last 30k miles before blowing up (granted it was maintained or "not maintained" by my grandmother then my uncle). The engine is currently toast.

Could be a rebox, sometimes a company will begin to changeover product lines, and it's cheaper for the new manufacturer to simply rebox or relabel old products in to their product box. That's what most companies did at my work when we did a changeover, it was often a PITA
