I think I came across someone who did something similar to clean up their drill press post. Your cleanup is going very fast! Makes me want to start on mine. You'll have yours finished by next weekend at this rate.

gotta take advantage of the next two day's,supply house's are shut down thur through monday for the holiday.gonna try and get the switch and bearings tomorrow,paint and clear on tuesday.if all goes well,i will spray on wed and start putting things back together by thursday night.

i will be wife and child free from thur till monday,wich means lotsa work on my house and wrapping this thing up in my shop at night,with no interuptions.we'll see.

heres the post after 15 minutes with some 100 grit,afterwards it will get some 220 and then oiled

so now that the holiday is finally over and i'm back in town,i'm back at it.i installed all the new bearings and started painting the pulley's

i've also gotten a lot of small things done,i finally got the variable speed parts losened up.they were completely froze with rust,after some pb blaster and working it back and forth with a hammer,it losened up enough to get it apart

still a few issues that i have to deal with,one is,i have to find a switch and also i have to figure out what the story is with one of the pulley's.one of them had a pin in the side of it,i thought it was a set screw,but it wasn't.apparently it wasn't an issue for the press,because i never felt it shear off.i think i'm just going to tap it and put a 1/4-20 or 5/16 set screw in it

but for now, the post is ready to go and i've prepped all the area's of the main body where things go through,they will get taped off and hopefully my buddy will bring my paint tomorrow

What kind of oil are you using on the post? I was just going to use some WD40 and then paste wax once I got the base, stand, and head in place.

haven't oiled it yet,i cleaned it with different papers and wiped it down with some wd-40 to prevent surface while i was away for 4 day's.i still have a few places to hit that didn't clean up,some small dents and such.after it's all said and done,i will probably just wax it.

so today i finally get my paint,and it's 51 for the high.going to wait until tomorrow to see what the weather brings.but for now i picked up my stickers from my buddy and they came out sweet.heres a pic of the before and then what there gonna look like.

heres the two colors i'm going with,ones a vanilla (hair lighter than JET colors) and the other is a toasted brown.kind of a coffee and cream look

everything got hung and were gonna see what the weather does temp wise.nice thing about a metal shop is that it will heat up fairly quick,once the sun's on it

last few for now,more to come once the color is on.the base,head and pulley cover and table are getting the vanilla,and the small misc stuff will be getting the brown.i might also add a brown pinstripe to the pulley cover,but that's undecided as of right now

cold? yer farther south than me,i'm in savannah,but i think it's gonna be a day or two and then back to 70's.as far as fancy,nah. just nicer than original,i like two tone things,plus i think those two colors together will give it the feel i'm looking for.all my tools get used,not beatin,but used.that's why i'm using good paint and a great clear,plus i get the stuff for next to nothing.

soon enough it will be done,and looking forward to seeing your as well.

so today i shot some color,two coats of the brown and two on the cream,gonna do a third tomorrow on the cream and hopefully my guy will be around so i can get the clear.was a little cool here today at 58,so the flash time took a little longer,but no problems. it's gonna be back up to the 70's by sunday,so maybe then is when i will do the clear.

if all goes well,i'll be putting things back together around monday or tueday.then i just have to get my new motor.think i found a 3/4 hp baldor for 90 bucks.

so far i have about a 9 day's in it and all said and done i will have about 172.00 dollars in it.heres some pics of the color on

Call Clausing Chris. They'll tell you. That's how I determined that mine was from 1963. Gotta love the fact that the company is still in business!!

and the last two for now,tomorrow i have to pick up some stainless allen head bolts,i'm using these for the reassembaly.i though i had what i needed in stock,but theres some sizes i just don't keep on hand.by the end of tomorrow i should be looking pretty good.

yesturday i spent a little more time on the press.i pressed the bearings on the spindle and after figuring out a few things,got it installed.pics to come.

Looking great Chris. You got me motivated to do mine. I started stripping the old paint off of mine this weekend. I got as far as completely stripping the base. Waiting on a new hose for my blast cabinet...once that's in, I'll do a final blast and then move onto other parts.

here it is coming together,i finally have the return spring/knob together and working great.then i decided to cut an aluminum knob for a sample of what i'm going to use.their a copy of some knobs i bought a few years ago cheap,now they are about 25 bucks a piece.so i threw a chunk of 1.5 in the lathe and it took me about 30 minutes to cut,sand and polish this one.i got the aluminum for nothing,and i have time.

got a few stickers done today to,first one was the clausing badge across the front.i wanted the same kind of look with the rivets,but didn't have any that small.but what i did have was some small nails with a small flat head on them.the original badge had raised letters,so i flipped it over to the smooth side and put the sticker on that side.then i ran the nails through and bent them over in a horse shoe,worked out pretty good i think.

also as you can see,i forgot the clamp on the bottom that holds the depth gauge.i pulled down on the press handle for the last time and realized that it should have gone on first before i started pressing bearings on the spindle.so,now i get to pull the chuck to get it on there,wich i really didn't want to do because of running into issue's with it not being right (bad run out).so i'm going to mark the shaft on the chuck,and mark the bottom of the qill and put it back together in the same spot and just hope for the best.

i'm sure it can use a good internal cleaning and some oil anyway,might as well take advantage and do it while it's off.

I was going to PM you back....I have the step-pulley model so I wouldn't need the sticker of the variable speed dial. Also, I looked over my badges again and they're actually in REALLY good shape...so really no need to send them. However, I WOULD like to get my hands on some of those regular Clausing stickers you made for the front. That would pretty nice on my toolbox!
