On a rainy day sunday sorted out some wrench sets and had the craftsman professional from 1/4 thru 1 3/4 - but was missing the 3/8 (ain't it always the case).

Ordered a new one for store pickup w/ some discounts for a bout 6 bucks and went to Sears (by my work) to pick up. The CM pro wrench no longer has "professional" stamped like my other set (I knew they were phasing.........) so declined.

blah, blah, blah.............

Mosey'd around the clearance section and saw a CM pro jack 50156 4 ton and walked for about 94.00 tax and all. Seemed?? like a good idea and need a new jack, as my other one is getting rather katankerious and small lift as well.

Puppy is still in the box and read some really horrible reviews after my return to work this morning, and now thinking I don't need a "leaker" hanging around (reviews most cited demise).

Felt like a good deal and the "4-ton" is probably just eye candy, but just need a reliable jack to hoist up some regular auto's at the home shop.

Did I get schmoozed by the craftsman's name and quick purchase? I'm half tempted to take this dude back before it sits around too long, or just keep it & hope for that diamond in the rough?

I always use this site for product reference, but slipped up here.

If you actually Need a 4 ton Jack.. Take it back. Its Forever in a Day trying to create the PSI required to raise 4 tons with a 40MM bore, As the Load gets Higher and Higher the amount of oil actually transferred via the Pump Piston into the cylinder gets smaller and smaller.

I cant speak for Everyone, But my Experience has Not been Good. The Hydraulic Unit Design is used on Many different Shinn fu models, but ive found it very difficult to keep Pump Orings from Failing *After* you swap out that POS Ram Seal for a Quality UCUP.

My Gut tells me that when a Product has 75 "1" Star feedback out of a 112 Reviews.

I have one of those 4 tons. I went from liking it for 7 or 8 years of occasional use to hating it because it failed. With knowledge on this board, I put a new $5 seal in it and it works great. It still leaks a little but that is because I didn't replace the sealing o-ring around the ram. I will take car of that once I get some time.

So my overall verdict is that it's a decent jack because it uses a u-cup as the main seal. It still is a cheap import and will not last very long compared to a more expensive USA made jack. I'd probably keep and know that you will have to replace some seals in a few years.

Some people will talk about the Arcan Costco special. I have one of these too as it was to replace cm. it seems to smother than the cm pro but know one knows how it will age. Seems most jack do well when they are new, question is years from now when you really need it, will it perform.

Always trust Hibal over what I say. He knows way more about these. I can just talk about my experience with one.

My boss has 2 CM jacks at the shop. For as long as I've been around (18 monthsish) it's been a team effort to use them. One has a dead spot right where it contacts anything you could ever want to lift, and the other won't go above about half, so you start it out with the second until it stalls, and then start the first one.

My crappy, older black Torin from Wally World now lives at the shop since I just take my junk there to work on it anyway. It works just fine. It's sad that such a POS (or should be, anyway) can outlast something with the Craftsman name on it.

My only experience with these jacks is when they come in for service, your 1st hand experience is what counts. I honestly think the biggest issue arises when people buy these jacks and intend to use them on 4 ton loads. I'm not a big fan of the 2 piece seal that they utilize, I've noticed lots of lip failures and I can only speculate... But I suspect it comes from the PSI that needs to be generated to complete the task. As I stated.. The hydraulic unit is no stranger to the hydraulic world, it comes in many flavors and tonnage styles.
