I'd argue against that and have in the past. I purchased this for home use and its way overkill. My primary gripe is the finish is trash and most are spot rusting so in retrospect I wish I just bought a couple SK super sets or Proto/Williams. I'd of gotten less product, but just what I really needed, and the quality would of been higher.

That said the Chinese sockets may be fine/superior to the cheap US stuff, and yes they were cheap. On sale I paid $1 a socket AND they shipped free + Sears made a profit.

Can you spray them down with a light coat of WD40 or liquid wrench to prevent rust? There is no way you can have overkill with sockets. Just set up the right socket organizers so that they are stored properly and you will have a lifetime of capability for $300.

I agree with the previous post that this set is overkill. I have a USA made set and if I could do it again, I would purchase a smaller, higher quality USA set elsewhere. The chrome finish looks cheap and is prone to rust. WD40 may help prevent rust but they will still look cheap. I run a dehumidifier in my shop so I don't have much of a rust problem on my tools now but prior to moving into my new shop, a decent number of my craftsman sockets, extension, etc. would develop light surface rust. I didn't see that on my Snap On or other brand tools but of course that's comparing apples to oranges.

I have no issues with my USA Craftsman set. In fact, with the sizes laser etched, I quite like it. I haven't really had an issue with rust on them, even though the SK bit sockets in the same drawer rusted within a few months.

I've got the USA set too, and no issues with rust at all. Other stuff has rusted but the sockets are fine.

My 299pc USA set is rusting inside the broaching. My 1990's set are still like brand new inside. Both sets live in the same box.

I keep a couple of desiccant packets in each of my tool drawers to prevent surface rust formation. I will also throw smaller ones in blow mold sets that have my impact sockets. Seems to work fairly well for me.

Guys who are seeing rust, why not take them in to Sears for replacement?

Edit: also, +1 desiccant packs :)

All my home stuff gets wiped down with a penetrating oil before going back (OCD). Its the finish, its just a cheap chrome plating. I have other chrome tools that are fine.

Ironically one of the reasons you chrome things is to prevent corrosion.

Its cosmetic and very minor, sockets work fine.
