Cman Needle Nose Pliers

I have a old pair of Craftsman Needle Nose Pliers that I tried to get replaced at Sears. The old pliers have a hinge like these pliers on the left. All that Craftsman now has are pliers with the hinge like the pliers on the right.

I'm hesitant to exchange the pliers for what I think is a inferior hinge type. The left hinge seems to me to be stronger and applies pressure laterally across the jaws. While the right hinge will apply more pressure on one side of the jaw making the grip area smaller. Besides I have been able to get the left hinge type to open & close more freely than to type on the right. Am I wrong and the difference is minor?

Should I try to grind the old pliers to get them to close tight again or just get the replacement?

That's the replacement they are offering with the chump hinge. Plus when I hold the jaws up to the light I can see light between the jaws. It is almost as bad as the needle nose I'm trying to replace. I think I'm going to take a file to the jaw near the hinge to try to get a tighter close on the pliers I have. If that does not work I'll check out a new Klein. A older Klein needle nose I have still is fine.

The gap you are talking about, is it at the tip or towards the cutting surfaces? I just checked my needle nose and all 3 pairs of new Channellocks of various models and 2 pairs of Proto all closed tight and flawless at the tip, but have a slight opening as you get closer to the hinge. When I was looking into new needle nose a few months back I was reading up on the Snap On's and they are ground the same way as the Channellocks and Proto's that I have in terms of the gap.

The one's I got the red handle one's are junk. mine broke right at the hinge, the black handle one like above I have had for years never a problem.

I have both types and there is a difference.

I have both as well. The two halves pivot around a single joint. What's the difference? Take off some material on your originals and you have the same design.

I have one of the modern WF Craftsman ones like you showed. I also have an older Craftsman Pro one like your original. Both are good. The Pro one is a favorite of mine. I'd probably just get it replaced with the modern WF one while you can, which is not bad by any means and still a good tool today. - Paul
