Yeah this has been going on for a while. I've only gotten refurbs that look like brand new though. I've never seen Sears give out ones that looked used let alone dirty

YOu can ask them to simply rebuild your ratchet right there I have heard. The store by me has a big rack of refurbished ratchets in all different styles so if one breaks you can pick out which ratchet looks best or whatever. They started doing this because they were getting ripped off by people abusing tools and then taking them back to be warrantied when they really shouldnt be. People talk about how great craftsmans warranty is because they can use chrome reducers on 600ft lbs impacts, break them and return them or use a 2 ftcheaper bar ona 3/8 ratchet and then get a brand new one. Sears warranty is a little too good and now they have had to make changes because of these people

You need to stand up for yourself man. Stand your ground. Tell them you want another new one because your new one doesn't work. They will give in if they want to continue doing business with you.

when I take mine in I grab a new one and make them switch it out so I don't get another broken one , so far no problems , but I only have had one ratchet break and that was after 25 years of use .

Yeah i've done that before so I tried it this time and they just reached in their toolbox behind the counter and gave me the refurb.

hehe I bet the guy who gave me the refurb didn't even know how to turn a ratchet, i'll ask about that though next time. Would I be able to get a rebuild kit if they don't build in-store ya think?

Sad thing people screwed it up for everyone else

Didn't even think about it, figured i'd get a new one. Sears is about 1/2 hour away so I didn't want to run home to get the receipt anyway.

If it was brand new......never used.....them turkeys would have given me another new one. But......if it had been used and had wear, scratches etc....then a refurbished unit would be ok. Me and the manager would have a serious pow-wow about this.

I agree! Take it back along with your receipt. Explain what happened and tell them you want a new one and not a refurbished one. Ask for the manager if the sales guy says no way and point to the sign on the wall that says "Satisfaction Guaranteed" and tell them your not satisfied.

Went through a spell in the late '90s where everytime I seriously used (not abused) my Cman 3/8 or 1/2 teardrop ratchets, they would start to skip or slip and I would take them back. Always got remans back. finally must have gotten a good set as I'm going on about 5 years since I've had a problem with either. My tools are almost all craftsman, but I'm not a huge fan of their ratchets due to the past problems.
