C'man Slow speed pulley problem

Guys I have a problem and I am wondering how big an issue it really is. While doing a restore of a little King Seeley Craftsman drill press I found; one of the three bearing retaining flanges on the slow speed pulley got broken off. The other two seem to hold it in place but I am not sure about down the road after some extended use.

Not being too familiar with these I am wondering if I have to find a new pulley or if I can just run it as is? You thoughts and ideas for repair would be greatly appreciated.

I think I'd just run it, once both belts are in place and everything properly aligned, I don't think it will go anywhere.

Yes it seems to work fine now, and I don't see where it would get much pressure. Somebody designed it with three retaining screws so I am hoping that is over kill.

I agree with the above comments. The bearings are snug enough in the pulley so two of the retaining screws should be adequate.

The important thing about the Multi Speed Attachment is to make sure that the pulley never makes contact with the cast iron base. Those three screws on top are part of that. The bearing shaft set screw in the base is another part. I typically use a medium-strength thread locker on that set screw.

Are those sealed bearings? I'm not a fan of using sealed bearings with the softer spindle pulleys or MSA pulleys unless a low-strength bearing retainer fluid is used. The seal adds just a little bit extra friction which promotes the bearing to turn on the softer metal.

One more thing... in your first picture, it appears that the bearing extends above the rim of the pulley. The screws on your pulley look very short. They could be about 1/8" longer to extend over the outer race.

If you make a mark with a Sharpie on the outer race of the bearing and the edge of the bearing housing on the pulley, you will likely see the outer race will turn within the pulley after several start-ups. Even the outer race of a shielded bearing will turn in the pulley.


I can actually turn the outer race by hand and need to address this on my machine. I also need longer screws too.

Well thanks for all the tidbits there. Obviously I need to go back to the drawing board as the bearings are sealed, it isn't flush with the with the rim of the pulley, and I don't have any green retainer fluid. Franlee I was hoping I was done (lol).

I will take that apart and figure out why it is not flush, apply retainer to the shaft before repressing, and find a couple longer screws (although these are the ones that came off of it and slightly extend past the edge of the outer race.
