I have been building a CNC plasma Table
I purchased the Gantry from Precision Plasma LLC In Minnesota
and I purchased the Electronics package from CandCNC in Texas.
I built the base of the table and the water pan/slat bed.
Drilled and Tapped the frame for the CRS Rails, Drilled the CRS Rails as well on the mill/drill.
Steel from the local steel supply. A Co-Worker said "It Looks Professionally Built"
I said "Thanks... I think...."

it is a 5x5 Standard Duty Gantry...
That with the Magnetic Breakaway Torch Holder and a router mount
$3,420 shipped
Electronics package was
$2140.50 Shipped that is the Bladerunner Ethercut with DTHCIV (Digital Torch Height Control IV (reputedly the best there is) and the 620 Motors.
I did end up buying the software bundle at $320 and had to buy the Universal Plasma Adapter Kit ($142) because I didn't have the spare change to get the Hypertherm PM65 yet and needed to get some widgets cut ASAP.
So of all the things I am using my PM30 with the adaptation. Seems to work ok on the aluminum. and Great on Steel Sheet!
The Steel for the table was around $1100 I think... I don't have the receipts in front of me right now.
Roughly $7500 total as it sits.
Computer was an HP that I had on hand doing nothing of consequence.
I DID buy a copy of Windows 7 Pro 32Bit to load on it and have it dual boot with XP Pro 32 Bit, will add a Linux Loading later on when CandCNC releases the settings for it.

Now, I built this over the course of about 3 weeks.
Options at the time were
Burntables... They got back to me and their 4x2 was $7700 plus shipping of $300... No Plasma or anything else.
Lightning CNC well they don't come with a floating Z which you NEED for automated cutting and I contacted them the same day as the other guys and they STILL have not gotten back to me!
Their table looks ok and Has a G540 Controller...
But their support is apparently sketchy.
PlasmaCam was 10k for a 4x4 Proprietary software...
Torchmate was $3500 for a 2x2 plus another 3200 for their Torch Height Control, no table or water pan or plasma....
Go Torch is $3000 with no torch height controller no table pan etc...
The Tech Support from Ron and Tom at PPLLC and CandCNC is Top Notch.
You can't go wrong with them... one thing though if you go with a 5x5 or a 4X4 Order your Motor Cables about 5 or 6 feet longer!

I can mount up to a 1 1/4 HP Router on it.
I currently just have a 3/4 HP Porter Cable Trim Router

Now that I have the space I'll be looking closer at a CNC gantry router mill. I'm leaning more toward a spindle eventually. Is yours for personal tinkering or a business?

Both really, until I can have space to go to a bigger Plasma Table with a bigger Plasma.

I would really like to go to a laser engraver to be honest...
What I am doing now I have 450 Widgets to get out the door.
So they have to be blanked out, Media Blasted, Powder Coated
Engraved, Engraving Filled and then packaged and shipped.

I had another Client wanting stuff cut for them before I even had the machine!
If it works out it can build a place for itself to live!

Nice job, I have the same thing but the 4x8. They really do make good kits, both companies. I think the only complete I would consider would be Arclight, but you definitely pay for it, not necessarily a bad thing if you are putting in a working shop making money. I have a new PM85 ready to go on my 4x8 to replace my old 1000.

Your Build on Welding Web was an inspiration!
Getting it running in about 2 weeks from delivery of the Electronics seems to be making good time!
The Frame is a bit different from your version to mine. This one had you welding a piece of 11Ga to the "Square" in the middle, I changed it a little bit and made it with 4" deep sides. So the Slats are a half inch below the lip.
My local steel supplier doesn't carry anything wider than 4' nor longer than 8'
When I buy full sheets I will get a 4x5 and a 3x4 Easy to handle and I can cut what I need out of them.

Anything larger I might need to Make a change or so...

Well, I made the mistake of buying 4x10 sheets of 14g on my first order. What a pain. I'm not ordering anything over a 4x4 anymore unless I need it for something specific. Oddly enough, I think it's easier to move plate than sheetmetal. I think it's easier to deal with the weight than the awkwardness from being flimsy. The drawback of living in the middle of southern Cali is not having room for a forklift.

Also, glad you enjoyed the build thread. I had fun building it. I'm getting antsy right now since my wife and I moved, it's going to take a little while before I'm up and running again. Don't even have 220 in the new garage, so I can't run 90% of my tools.

I can sling load a 4x4 sheet of plate pretty easy with the shop crane And some chains.
Hope I get to the point where I have a NEED for a Fork Truck!

Are you just using a cherry picker? The biggest pain for me is loading material. Unloading after stuff is cut isn't too bad.

Average 2 Ton Cherry Picker with 4 Chains and appropriate Size Grab Hooks...
Big Sheet Stock is a pain because it is so floppy...
I have considered mounting a 39" conveyor roller on the infeed side of the machine.
Or a Hydraulic Table Lift with rollers Been trying to design some rollers that can extend up from the slat bed then be retracted below the slats...
If I build a bigger machine ever I will use the PPLLC Standard Duty Bridge gantry.
Allows loading from all sides without rails in the way.

My Brother in law broke the Alternator Bracket on his race car and needed it repaired.
This is the Umpteenth time To "repair it...
So I decided I would just make a NEW part.
Well I scanned it into a .DXF file using my CNC table... and Sheetcam "Scanything"
Then I "Fixed" it in CAD making it I believe SUPERIOR to the original...

a "Supereyes B005" Camera from Amazon ($28) and the software from Sheetcam called "Scanything" WORKS GREAT! This is just a test but will be ultra handy when someone drags in a part they want duplicated or a pile of cardboard templates...
That is the Supereyes Camera on the right of the Z axis. the Silver tube...

Congrats man! If I built my own kit I would have definitely went the same route you did. I was Lucky enough to get a used Torchmate kit turn key for dirt cheap from a college upgrading their unit -_-

Can you post more pics on how you built the water tray? My plasma table came with a downdraft table and I definitely want to switch to a water tray before I use it.

As for that engraved ALT bracket, did you just cut it, change tools then engrave it or once u cut it, did you fix it to something to prevent it from moving? I would love a feature like this but I'd be worry about the placement being exact (lets say it was a square and the text needed to be dead center)

That camera scanythingy is awesome! I'm gonna have to check sheetcam out.. Any reason you chose sheetcam over vetric?

Yes, that camera is awesome. I have sheetcam as well and will have to try that scanything. Thanks for sharing.

I provided plans and have a local sheet metal shop making my water tray now. It is 116" x 50" x 3.75" deep. 16ga stainless steel with a drain on one end. This is for a 4x8 table. I should pick it up the first part of next week and can post up pictures if you're interested.

If you can get one fabbed from Stainless with the Bungs installed to drain it and such do it.
Well it was made from 4 pieces of 11 Ga Sheet, 4"x64" and two pieces of 11 Ga Sheet 64"x 32" plus 336" of GMAW, Full Perimeter, Across the middle, and up each corner. The Two Larger sheets making up the bottom weld across the middle in short 1" stitches, taking frequent breaks, same around the perimeter...
the 4"x64s were levelled all around then welded into the frame then the bottom was pulled up clamped and welded in the same "Stitch" fashion.
then the Slat Supports were welded in and levelled, and the slats were levelled.

For the Engraving I am using a Porter Cable Trim Router and Onsrud 60 degree Carbide engraving bits.
On that bracket since the lettering would end up at an odd angle I cut the part out of plate then fixtured it to a piece of Plywood set my origin and my Z Zero.
then ran the program.

I worked at an engraving years ago we used 3M double stick Table Tape to fix small parts on the table.

If you wanted to you could engrave first reset everything and cut...
OR you could use a scriber or plate marker... I don't have that.
But I will be adding it soon enough.

As to why sheetcam? Well same reason as why Mach3... it was part of the package.
Sheetcam runs about $175
Mach3 about the same I think, and Scanything is about $85ish...
Everything except Scanything was part of a Bundle Deal from CandCNC saving about a hundred dollars... I am currently using a Hypertherm PM30... Modified for the table...
it "Works" but that quarter inch stuff was about at it's limit at 15 IPM... I will be putting a PM65 with Machine torch on it ASAP. but that is another 3k!

Never used Vectric... But So Far I am digging Sheetcam. Saves the trouble of writing the code! Download the free trial version of Sheetcam and see what You think.

I was able to get the 116" x 50", 16ga, stainless sheet broke by a sheet metal shop this week. The water table is in. Have to finish up the sacrificial slats, shim and level entire table, then fill.

KKroger - The engraving came out awesome! I would like to learn how to retrofit my trim router to the gantry to be able to do that. I'm still just trying to wrap my head around learning to run this thing with the torch.

Well it is FAR easier to run the router.

If you are running MACH and the CandCNC controller.
In "Ports and Pins" change the spindle to output 2 or 3 instead of 1 (1 is the plasma)
Plug the router into that outlet on the controller.

When you setup the cut in Sheetcam just use the MACH3 Post processor.
Sheetcam will let you do text in that software or you can creat your image in Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator or some such. Get a good graphic artist to show you how!

Some sort of mount for your router.
PPLLC sells the one I used for like $25 and it fits the porter cable trim and laminate router.

Get some engraving bits from Onsrud (enco, msc or Grainger have them and there are other vendors too I use Enco)

You will need to somehow fixture your plate.You can use plywood or UHMW or HDPE and create a fixture... Wait until you see my new fixture!!!! you will LOVE it I swear...

Set your zero off the plate bring your Z down in the middle of the plate and use a slip of paper (thin normal paper is about .0025 thick) until the bit contacts the paper, you will have to move it back and forth as you lower the Z slowly until you can't move the paper, then Zero the Z axis...

find your path origin (in Sheetcam you can set this where you want it.
move the X and Y to that location and Zero both.
Hit RUN....

Your cuts need to be light... no more than .005 with .002 clean up pass and probably .012-.015 in depth if you want to fill....
also your speed needs to be around 30 IPM to get a nice smooth letter.
the router turns at 30k so you will be not taking off much per revolution the chip load will be about .001...

It is important to make sure your plate is level before engraving.
I don't use coolant but you probably should. Cool Tool is what we always used in the engraving shop way back when with the Gorton Pantographs!
If you can tru your fixture every time you use it so much the better.
Try to use fixturing methods that don't stick up above the plate much.
Make your Rapids about .750... so you don't smack the tool on them.

The Hardest part is creating the copy...

Wednesday evening I had a rush job come in, Client needed a flange for a fuel tank to mount the pump for an LS swap into a 71 Chevy Short box.
This will go inside the tank to buck up against the sheet metal to beef it up a bit. He needs it by morning so I took some quick measurements designed it in CAD tool pathed it in Sheetcam, Swapped on the Plasma Cutter and chopped it from a remnant of 3/16 plate I had on hand. I let him off cheap since he is doing the swap for his dad. Yeller is a show truck he did for his dad a couple years back has been in World of Wheels and is a VERY clean truck.
The Small holes were specified as 3/16 for a #10 machine screw.
So 3/16 with plasma is tight, I didn't set it up to do a "Peck" center.
I chased the holes with a twist drill and the drill press.
You can see the DROSS in a couple of the pics but it is not that bad really.
Mostly it just knocks off with a light tap. The Big thing is the SMOOTH cut edge. 30 Amps at 15IPM...

awesome! What a kerf tho!

**** that is with 30 amps! Likely ain't gonna get smaller!!! with the more powerful cutter I will probably have to speed it all up a bit.
