It seems CNC routers are becoming more common and I have a V1 Engineering MPCNC in progress.
3D printers are amazing. Even better is the community to help you find the files you can download and print without doing a lot of in-depth CAD work. Is there an equivalent community/file-sharing for CNC routers?

I have been debating about buying a CNC Router, something in the $5K dollar or less range. This would be for home use and possible doing a few jobs for people but not definitely not for a business type scenario. The last thing I would want to do is have a full time job again, I much prefer playing golf and taking a nap afterwards. But doing an occasional job for someone would be something I would be interested in. Just so it doesn't turn into an everyday job.

Check out the Maslow CNC router (https://www.maslowcnc.com/). You provide the router ($200 for the model they suggest at HD) and $100-$200 worth of lumber and plywood, buy their controllers and assorted bits ($549 at time of typing), assemble it yourself, and you're off and CNC routing!

I plan to build one as soon as I've got the space, after we move. For less than $1k you're in business, and there's already a community of makers using the technology.

Damn you 67CarGuy! :ROFLMAO:

I have been dreaming of the Shapeoko CNC router, but this looks interesting as well. The only rub on the Shapeoko is the cost for the size.

I know, I know! :) The size and the price were the two greatest factors for me, and the Maslow set-up allows me to minimize both and still expand later.

If you have a 3d printer, I can second the MPCNC also. I've been running one quite a while now and have been have good luck with it.

Thingiverse does have some CNC type projects. Most of what I do with the CNC I design myself. Fusion360 with the Guffy Post Processor has worked well or you can export the dxf and use estlcam to create the gcode of the machine.

I'm assuming you're on the V1 forum for the MPCNC too? If so, post this question there. There's a lot of guys on that forum with links to where they get dxf CNC designs from.

Onefinity customer here and very happy with it, bang for the buck is excellent. Comparable class of machine to the shapeoko, but I found it to.be superior in a few meaningful ways.

As for files, between fusion 360 and vcarve I whip up most things... depends what you are trying to do. Thingiverse is amazing for 3d prints agreed, if there is something similar and specific to CNC I don't know it...

I am going to hijack this thread a little, so I apologize.

@Zengineer can you expand upon your thoughts on the Onefinity vs Shapeoko?

I have been waiting for the "sale" to come back on the Shapeoko 4XXL and have really only compared it to the XCarve.

The ballscrew vs belts is a game changer. I am a former CNC maint guy but a newb for CNC routers.

Hmm, not really as I've never used a Shapeoko. But I was sold on the ball screws and overall approach to build. Combine these with the fact it it's a Canadian company (and I'm in Canada, eliminating exchange rate challenges) and the price was good, and I was sold. I did a lot of review reading that supported the Onefinity choice as well, but I can't really definitively say anything about the Shapeoko.

Would I buy the Onefinity again? Absolutely.
