My guess would be that there were more mechanics/heavy repair workers than coach/pattern makers. So fewer of this style of vises were sold.

Im willing to bet those get broken easily if they are abused at wide openings, because they open more than a normal mechanics vise by the looks of it and the jaws and towers are quite slender. Less of them to begin with and a higher loss rate means very few left.

I think they would make a great vise for holding pieces for wood carving. There was a really nice 4" Prentiss swivel jaw/swivel base of this type on my local CL that I have been tempted to grab, however they are asking a bit much in my opinion, and now it looks like the ad is gone.

+1 on this. On the few I have seen in the wild, all had jaw damage.

I have a pretty old Parker coachmaker's vise with smooth jaws and use it all the time for woodworking.

It is very handy and the smooth jaws are kind to wood. Every woodworker should have one.

I've got one like this... But has original green paint...
I got it from an old man that retired his woodworking shop.
Not super heavy. The jaws are stronger than you think.

It can be your's at a very reasonable price.

Brownnells sells one that is similar for stock making. BusyBee in Canada sells an import as well called a Parrot vise. I have one which I use stock making.
