I can get a coates 20-20 tire changer in great condition for a song . Will it handle 16-17 inch alloy rims if I am carefull? I also have several atv's that maybe this machine could handle.Or maybe I should concentrate on the turntable type changers. I have'nt touched a center post changer in 30 years. What do you think?:headscrat

It has been a few years since I used one but it should handle the big rims. If I remember right some you can flip up the bottom bead breaker and put in spacers for the bigger rims. Not sure if the ATV rims are big enough to do on that machine. I never did get a chance to use the new style changers, but they do look like they are more rim friendly.

The 20-20 and the like are post type changes and being such are a pain to use on raised center mags . Small wheels have to have open centers to use , but over all they are great machines. The usual problem with them is the return springs on the breaker weaken over time and won't retract properly. I've got a 30-30 and had a 10-10 before it, in my home shop. Both were taken out of service because of weak springs. I used trampoline springs to replace the much more expensive coats replacements...

I have a 20-20 and although it can handle 16" rims, I would avoid using it on modern alloys, especially if they are very wide.

The upper bead breaker is not well-suited for alloy wheels and the precautions you would have to take to prevent damage or breakage would make it not worth the time, IMHO.

A rim clamp machine would be a much better investment for those applications.

I use a 40-40A all the time on 16 & 17" aluminum & chome covered aluminum rims. (Putting on factory style tires). If the 20-20 has the style arm where the top arm that doesn't contact the top of the rim, and you use the nylon/plastics ( you buy) that cover the rotating part you use to peel the rim on & off the rim, and you're carfeul, you'll be fine.

I use a rag where the circular spinning nut that holds the rim down contacts the wheel. Protects the wheel from damage.

If you have the other style top arm, you'll either have to change it, or count on using that machine on steel rims only. If you're looking to use one for super low profile tires, I wouldn't recommend it.

If you don't have the air blast, that will be alot of fun on some tires!
