Coating a Floor that's Been Previously Sealed

I've got a 1500 square foot concrete floor to refinish. It is smooth, crack free and in good condition. It was sealed with concrete sealer about 20 years ago.

I want to recoat it now primarily for cosmetic reasons. Because of the sealer and the uncertainties of getting it off enough to get epoxy to bond (I read horror stories all over the internet about epoxy peeling liftin etc, attributed primarily to poor surface preparation) can I just recoat it with more concrete sealeer? And. can concrete sealer be colored?

Are there other floor coatings or paints that will work over sealer with out the need for grinding the floor?

This will be my shop primarily used for wood and metal working with some car repair or maintenance.

I don't want to spend $1000 -2000 for epoxy and have it come loose.

The best way is to diamond grind. This will act twofold, it will remove the existing sealer and profile your concrete for any coating you will be applying.

I was just looking at penetrating concrete sealers last week, at a few of the local paint stores (Sherwin Williams, etc.), and they had both clear and tintable sealer/stains, and it stated on the product container that even after years, you could simply recoat. Might be worth looking into. I think one of the brands I looked at was H&C Concrete sealer, and I think Rustoleum had one, as well.

If you don't know the product brand that is on your floor, it may be a good idea to call some manufacturers of concrete sealer and ask.

Rent a floor buffer and sand/abrade the surface, pressure wash and then let dry for a few days. You could spray an acrylic lacquer thinned out 25-50% with acetone and that should be solid and work great. If you want a second coat, you can use less thinner for more build. If you have a decent sprayer, you can tint the sealer or use an acetone dye to stain before you seal. Just FYI, you cannot roll a solvent sealer over the acetone dye, but you can spray solvent sealer or roll a water based product on top.

That is a novel idea. However, when the weak sealer that was never intended to be a primer loses it's grip you will be grinding. Better to grind once.

Acid etching is ONLY useful for etching concrete. It will not be useful if your floor has been previously sealed or coated. This thread has become the land of misinformation.
