The hangar for my airplane has an asphalt floor. Is there a suitable paint for this that would hold up? Epoxy? Also, there are some dips in the asphalt where the tires sit. What can I use to patch that that would support the weight? Would thinset work?

I am confirming something with one of our manufacturers and will be back with you shortly. In the mean time, how large an area is it, what condition is it in and what color are you looking for.

There are plenty of paints and sealcoatings made for asphalt. Just be aware that it is more flexible than concrete, so you need a more flexible and stretchy coating.

Dents in asphalt can be diy filled in with "cold patch" and a tamper. Though getting an asphalt guy to do a hot patch is much better.

Current asphalt is level other than where tires set. It has no cracks but there are a few oil stains. I would like to paint it a lighter color maybe a light grey. The hangar has a T-shape. The back part where the tail rests is probably 12' x 12" and the front part is probably 38' x 15'.

I might be qualified to give an opinion on this.

32 years in coating business, stared with tennis court and running track construction including paving, asphalt parking lot sealing, then to epoxy in the late 80's. What your asking for is so site specific that you need be careful of what you are told. If your applying sport acrylic to the asphalt in the hanger you give up chemical protection. If you go the industrial coatings route, you loose the compatibility between materials.

You asking asphalt to be something it is not. It is both unbelievably hard and yet dynamic. Your wheel spots prove that.

Proven systems work due to design, your flying on your own here. Not to say it can't be done, but there are no known procedures for what your wanting to do.

Plenty of good products that might work.......for a while......or not.

tncatadjuster,
would a sealcoat like what we use for driveways not work?

If he wanted color we have done tennis courts with 55 gallon drums of colored sealcoat type liquid.

you can just roll it on and it is easy. Even tape off and do different colors with a band to break up if you really want to get fancy

You can use gator pave for the low spots depending how low but cold patch would work also. best to have an edge torched and chiseled out so patch is flat. be careful not to burn the Liquid out of the asphalt. key is to reheat slowly.

also there is a oil spot treatment that we use before sealcoating. I will look for it but it should be a Sealmaster product.

mix some fine sand with coating and it is a super nice finish. Not like a concrete epoxy type finish more gritty and harder to clean yet MUCH better than typical 9.5mm porous asphalt finish.
