There are a lot of "special" coatings, but IMHO, the simplest is silicon dielectric grease. Apply a generous amount after the terminals are clean.
Every homeowner/shade tree mechanic should have a tube of this stuff. Any electrical connection that is in a damp area should have a thin film. I even put it on exterior light bulb threads !

Ditto on the dielectric grease. I use it on all of my battery connections. I believe 3M also makes a red spray for battery connections but the name escapes me now. It works as far as keeping down the corrosion but in my estimation is kind of messy and always sticky. My vote is for dielectric rease.
