Hello all, I have a Coats 1055 balancer and am not able to get the weights were they need to be I guess. I go through the normal operations and install the weights as directed and when i go to let it balance again it always shows to add weight again when it should show all zeros. I have recalibrated it and it still does the same thing. I have down loaded the user manual for it and as far as I can tell I am doing everything the way the say to do it. I bought the balancer used on ebay and am wondering if there is something wrong or am I just not doing something right.

thanks for your help here
Mike

Mike,

Is this always with the same tire?? Is there something loose inside the tire?
or is the rim slipping on the cones durring the breaking and 'moving' the point the computer thinks is heave? Try a different tire. Try a wheel with no tire mounted and see if it is more predictable.

(Make sure your in OZ, not grams!)

I do Motorcycle tires with a Hoffman, so some of these may not apply to your machine... ;-)

thanks for the reply, I have not checked if the tire is moving on the cone but it is against the cone and then it tightens against the face of it. I have used the same rim and tire and marked where the weights would go and then moved the tire and whell assy on the balancer and spun it again and the spot will move on the tire where the weights will go. did this three times and came up with three different spots the weights should go. not really sure what is going on. i am going to go find a 14 inch wheel and tire and try to recalibrate it. I do not do many tires but sure gets frustrating useing this thing.

thanks again
Mike

Sounds like something loose in the tire. Break it down and check, could be water from someone who didn't drain compressor. If it does it with all wheels then its probably the balancer.

Sounds like you are putting the weights on 180 from correct position? Give the opposite a try.

Thanks again for the replys, I am mounting new tires and the instructions show that to recalibrate you mount a tire and wheel on the machine. I am still looking for the right combination of rim and tire to recalibrate it with. as far as installing the weights I have not tried installing them on the bottom as they show installing them on the top side but I will give it a try anyway. at this point I am trying anything, I have spent a lot of hours and nothing seems to work. I did mark the face plate of the balancer and the wheel to make sure it was not spinning when the machine goes into its brake mode to stop the spin.

thanks again everyone

Mike,

Are you sure about the calibration technique??? Mine recalibrates with no tire or wheel... just a weight that screws into the cone? (again mines a different machine. But how can it calibrate to an unknown??)

P.S. fill out your profile for location, you might be close enough for someone to come over and have a look-see! ;-)

hello again, I went and filled in where i am from etc, thanks for pointing that out. the instruction manual has me taking a 14" wheel ant tire and installing it on balancer and then after pushing a couple of buttons you spin it and add a 4oz weight and re spin and then it is recalibrated. I have a 14" wheel and tire but it is not the right offset of what the instruction says it has to be, not sure what difference that makes but it must. I tried it anyway and tried to balance a wheel with a brand new tire on it and still have the same issue of after adding weights and rebalancing it should show all zeros and it does not. very frustrating.

thanks again

I have a feeling that when you shut that machine off you may have to recalibrate it, I am not sure on that but will be figureing that out. after I did the recalibration I balanced 8 new tires and WOW what a easy job when its working right. really want to thank those that replyed to this issue. I will be on this site a lot more now :) I hope I can help others in the future also.

thanks so much

Mike,

IF you stick around long enough, you will catch it. Then you will start being totally dissapointed with you floor, cabinets, lighting, and pin-ups. Just sayin'

Hi Mike, how do you like your 1055? I have an 850 and was thinking of upgrading to a 1055. There's one price right that would need some work.

Hey all... I just stumbled upon this thread and had a couple of questions for anyone who may be familiar. In my shop we've got two Coats 950 balancers and they are about 7 years old. In the last few months however it appears as if they have been having difficulties balancing tires. We've had a couple of repairmen come in and fix them and they'd work for a couple of weeks and go right back to not working again. I got an old 14 inch rim from the dump and put an old 185 tire on it and use it as a recalibration tire for both machines, however they are never in sync with each other. My thoughts on the matter are this. If I could somehow get the calbration tire to be balanced to where if you were to spin it on both machines before calibrating and with rounding feature turned off the weight difference on both sides is less then .10 ounces, then when both machines are recalibrated they would both be in sync. I got the manual and it doesn't say that the tire needs to be balanced but it would make sense seeing as if it isn't balanced and the machine is recalibrated, if it comes up to .25 ounces over before recalibration (eg: when balancing a tire if you turn the rounding feature off when it says .00/.00 on both sides it will say .28/.30)... but how is .28 rounded down to .00 if it isn't from the initial recalibration in the first place? With that sort of difference in the balance the wheel is still out of balance by at least .50 ounces and the customer will definately feel it when they drive. So my theory is this... if I balance a tire to be used for calibration before recalibrating a machine would it be better for the machine? Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks!
