Code Blue - Crash Cart to the worksite - STAT

I won a public surplus auction for a Waterloo emergency department “crash cart” for $46.

I think it will make a cool tool cart for the shop. I think I’ll hang a bottle of tequila off the IV pole, and slip a fire extinguisher into the holder where the oxygen tank was.
Then I'll be prepared for any emergency.

I won't be able to go pick it up until after Christmas, so only have the auction pics for now.

Damn, Steevo! I just thought I was at work for a second... The big white CPR boards are pretty durable. Very high quality plastic. The plastic lids on top however are prone to cracking. I'd probably pitch that part of the cart. Awesome score!!!!

I showed this to my wife (who has worked in hospitals since 1977.) She suggests that knowing how well those carts are cleaned, that you clean it EXTREMELY well (possibly including steam cleaning) before you start using it. Pay special attention to the corners, seams, joints anywhere that blood etc. could get and not be cleaned well.

You got a smokin' deal, just clean it really good.

I acquired a hospital medication cart that was very similar a few years back. Was actively racing motorcycles at the time and used it for my pit toolbox. Big wheels made it easy to move around a rough pit area. Most of the other guys were envious.

That's why I tossed the plastic cover when I got mine (that, and with the cover off, I could stack another 26" toolbox on top).

I used Clorox disinfectant wipes on every crevice of mine before putting it to use.

I love the blue. But now you need a blue toolbox top to match.

Nice. I picked up a couple of medical carts free a few months ago from one of my customers. Gave one to a guy at work. These medical carts are pretty heavy duty as well.

Clorox wipes aren't good enough. 2 oz of bleach in a gallon of cool water and keep everything damp for at least 10 minutes. Hepatitis B is the bench mark for clean and that's what it takes.

I like the tequila bottle idea. I've always considered hanging a bottle upside down and putting a light bulb in it, and letting the cord dangle, like I.V. tubing.

I'm an accountant for a hospital and those new and stocked are $7-8k. Nice score, they are usually built very solid to try and justify the 8k they charge lol.

This is one reason why healthcare is so stupidly expensive.

What was so wrong with the old cart that they had to replace it with a new one for $7K? There is nothing apparently wrong with it, not even dents.

I'm happy that the denizens of GJ get deals, but the underlying problem, it seems to me, is pretty severe.

While I agree with your closing sentiments, I think you're being overly paranoid.

Bleach solution is a very effective disinfectant (still not perfect), but the disinfectant chemicals in Clorox and Lysol, and other "disinfectant" wipes (they must be labeled as "disinfectant") can be just as good. Bleach is also very good at getting steel to rust though.

For a crash cart being used in medical service, to be turned around and used again, you need to clean off any blood, and then keep every surface wet with a disinfecting solution for 10 minutes (wipes can still be sufficient for this, but you need to use a bunch to keep it wet for long enough).

But that's to make it sufficiently clean enough to turn around for immediate use. Viruses can only exist for the long term, in vivo. Outside of the body, they are destroyed by air. HPB has been known to survive on surfaces for over a week (which is an incredibly long time for a virus), but that time frame is unlikely on a visibly clean surface. If you were to clean any visible dirt from all the surfaces, and then wet every surface with disinfectant, you'd be fine, since it's not like the cart was splattered in blood the week before.

Awsome Idea. It will would make a great service cart and that IV stand would be great if you had a motorcycle you wanted start, but you wanted the gas tank off to check that it runs before you put the tank back on and button it up. Motion pro has a gas tank bottle that would work great on there with an inline petcock.... I might have to see if I can score one somewhere..... P.S. In case it's not been mentioned.... You ****! I keeeeed, I keeeeeed.

The tequila idea is great though I don't know how long that bottle would be on there or how much work I'd actually get done!

Steveo what a nice find, you should be proud of that cart, I though that my find at the red cross was a score, but you out did me, so to cleaning it, I let my carts sit for about 3 weeks and then took them to a car wash and power cleaned them, being they came from a blood place I didn't want to take a chance. My carts can be seen at "give blood" and yes you get a you ****.... Rich

I agree fully But I don't make the rules, just do what I'm told haha. I have all sorts of stuff out in the shop that came from the construction dumpster that has been "replaced due to being obsolete" or had one bolt broken etc.

Haha thank man! I found both of those at the same time, the only thing that was broken was the plexiglass that protects the laptop stand on one and the levitator, they just didn't know how to adjust the load bolt on the strut that raises it. Took all of 2 hours to have them both functioning and turned into what they are now. I walk by the area that they throw all this stuff away almost everyday for lunch so I grab everything that looks like it can be used haha
