Code for disconnect between meter and service panel

I will be relocating my meter which will place the meter approx. 8 feet farther away from the service panel than it is currently at. What I would like to do is run the service entrance cable from the meter into the basement to a disconnect. This cable would be the same length as the existing cable. I would then run a new cable from the disconnect to my existing service panel. Are there any issues here? Does anyone know of a specific NEC code that would prohibit this? Thanks.

don't believe this will work as if it's gonna be inside the dwelling, it needs to be near an entrance to the dwelling.

The service disconnecting means shall be installed at a readily accessible location either outside of a building or structure or inside nearest the point of entrance of the service conductors.

The disconnect (you can use either a fused switch or a circuit breaker) will also need to be labeled as approved for service entrance use.

As far as grounding, since I will have a disconnect between the meter and thes main service panel, does the disconnect box need to be grounded or can I only ground the main service panel?

The disco will be the service disconnect so grounding will have be done there & a 4-wire feed will have to run to panel.

Thanks Norcal. So in the panel, I will need to break the existing bond between the neutral and ground and seperate the ground and neutral wires so that they are on seperate bars. Sound right?
