Code on Panel Latch?

I have a 100 amp Square D panel as a sub panel in my garage. I really hate that cheesy latch they all come with. Mine keeps jamming, I fiddle with it, it works a bit, then it jams again. Tired of monkeying with it. I would like to cut in a nicer latch. Is there anything in the code about the type of latch on a power panel? Also, any recommendations for a simple swap?

I don't like those latches either. How about using a magnet to keep the door closed? Perhaps glue one inside the door near the latch?

You'll probably violate the UL rating of the panel by modifying the latch, but I don't think there's an NEC rule against it.

You will violate the UL regulations. Any modification of the unit requires it be submitted for another inspection. Did this for units we designed and built. CSA and CE are the same, require resubmitting the unit for testing.
The magnet stuck on with silicone sealer will work well. I use one the mailbox outside.

Looking at the SQ D catalog for accessories for loadcenters should some form of a add a lock listed there, that way no need to re-invent the wheel.

I looked at using the OEM lock for the door. $60?! Generic locks of that style are $10. The catch side of the lock is unique to the panel, guess that justifies the extra $50.

I think I'll keep it simple - remove the metal catch part on the latch and use a magnet to hold the door shut. Thanks guys.

The latch often is hard to secure and the door hangs slightly open. I have 3 of those panels in my house. The latch is not the best.

Often enough to be irritated by the latch.
