Code Reader for GM

Since my 1995 Chevy K2500 is giving me some problems again, I've been looking on around to buy a code reader.

Now I know that with OBD 1 you don't necessary need a scan tool since you can use the paperclip method. But I was wondering. Should I get more information out of the system using a scan tool or not. For example; I have a code 32, EGR circuit error. Would a Scan tool tell me more or just the same?

Could you tell me what you use and what you like about it?

an actual scan tool will let you see the datastream and give you some control of some special tests like IAC control etc. but as far as just trouble codes go a scan tool is going to give you the same code numbers. seeing the datastream will give you more information on your egr problem but your circuit problem would point me to the sloenoid, wireing, ecu. a scan tool prolly wont help you there as much as a multimeter or a powerprobe would.
