Looking to put a code reader on my Christmas list. I know the lower range of these tools won't do what the dealer's scanners can, but it would be nice to have the ability to read basic trouble codes. Looking for suggestions.

Here's one I spotted on Amazon that's one of their best sellers and has very good reviews:

Thanks in advance!

Guess it all depends on what you want in your scan tool

I use a very inexpensive code reader virtually identical to the Autel MaxiScan MS300 I got from Summit Tool on sale run less than $20 works just fine and does what I need lets me know what my check engine light is all about and allows me to reset.

And meets the most basic criteria you outlined in your post

Fairly certain this does everything the one you linked to does at half the price. It's one of the cheapest standalone tools that will do live data + codes.

The Launch tool can be had a few bucks cheaper on ebay with standard shipping by the way.

If you have a smart phone, an elm327 adapter is another option that even after purchasing an app, would be cheaper than a standalone tool.

The elm327s that are all over eBay and Amazon are hit and miss. These guys release free updates all the time. All of the support documentation is written by native English speakers. It’s a Canadian company. The app is good. Provides mode $06 data, live data graphing, and extended code coverage for most vehicles. And the price is RIGHT!

X2 and I am sure there will be more. I have a bunch of the cheap bluetooth obd2 readers and they are spotty at best. Have to screw around with them too much. Bluedriver never fails
