******This is my old garage, I’ve sold this garage and now work in my Texas Barn.*****

I've always wanted a big garage for my toys ever since I was a teenager and as I've went through school and college I've dreamed of a big garage. Recently I was faced with the question of do I build a garage on my current home's property or do I purchase a new house with a big garage. So since I had time before I could build I started looking to see what the market had around my town. I saw this house and thought that the garage was a nice size for sure, but what does the wife think about the house? Turns out she loved this house more then our current home.

So we started the process and finally closed on the house 2 weeks ago!

So here is the beginning of my new garage!

It has 2 garage bay, one is close to 33'x30', the other is maybe 25'x20'. Then there's a bathroom and hallway between the two bays and then there's 2 small room behind the smaller garage bay.

My plans is to use the smaller garage bay for the daily drivers and storage of chirstmas stuff and camping gear. The big bay will be my automotive shop bay, and the two smaller rooms that's roughly 33'x11' will by my woodworking area.

I'm sure I will be changing the layout as time goes on since none of the walls are load supporting walls. But for the first year I'm keeping it like it is with the exceptiong of maybe adding a door between the auto bay and the hallway, pain in the *** to go outside just to turn the light on in the hallway for the auto bay area.

Yep it's a detached garage, I never was a fan of attached garage for actual automotive work cause of the smell, but it is convenience when the weather is bad but it's just something I'll have to deal with.

Currently I am in the process of moving our stuff over to the new house and getting the old house ready to rent out to the tenants. So progress will be slow for now. I just wanted to start a thread to document my changes with the garage and my projects!

Thanks! That was one of the biggest thing I liked about itm it also has a furnace in there but since I'm not in there I don't have it on right now.

I told the wife I was thinking of finishing the wall and painting it green on the bottom , white on top, and a red stripe in-between. She thought I was nuts.

Nothing much on the new garage but I had to build this egress window and well to make it legal to rent my old house out. I'll trim it out and paint all of the bare wood soon. Also want to place a strip of something along the inside to cover the edge of the plexiglass.

Went ahead and put in the rental permit request and hopefully I'll have it come April 3rd and i can start moving into the new house!

So I moved a truck load of stuff from the house to the garage. It's going to take a few trips....

Much to my dismay, I haven't really done much in the garage. The house has taken priority and we are still getting stuff put away from moving. Also redoing the retaining wall that has started to fall at the new place. Somehow they thought just stacking blocks on top of each other without pins or adhesive would hold 2 feet of dirt on top of 2.5 feet of gravel thats not lined with fabric to keep the soil out of the gravel. Oh and did I mention there's no drain pipe behind the wall? So I've been stacking blocks up along the garage and spreading the gravel on the driveway and the dirt goes around the garage to create a slope away from the garage to direct rain water away from the base.

So I was moving the wood bench that came with the garage to the woodshop side of the garage during lunch and figured I'd take a few pictures. I plan to put the cabinets and bench top in the corner to create a Little shape bench but I need to raise the outlets higher then the bench before final placement.

Also a pic of the retaining wall rebuild project, going to be moving some of that dirt/gravel mix tonight.

Nice size, lots of potential. I don't get the hallway though, seems like a waste of space, your floorplan almost makes it look like the one side was a rental or something, totally seperate.

The previous owner had a archery shop in one half so the hallway lead to his "shop" in the back corner. He also had a construction business so it was on the big open side of the garage. That wall is a hinder in effiency so I'm planning to either take it down or install a door of some sort.

Pics of the retaining wall project from this weekend's work. I now got to move the blocks that you see in the last picture and start removing the dirt and gravel. If the wall wasn't leaning I would still tear it down cause the previous owner got a lowest bid job done and it really shows it as I've taken the wall apart.

So almost 2 weeks later I'm now at the point of gluing the cap on the wall and continue back filling with gravel the rest of the way. It's been some long gruelling work with this retaining wall but it's almost done!

So with the retaining wall project mostly done( need to finish the backside but looking for free or cheap bricks to do the project) I started cleaning the garage and get started in the wood room.
Yesterday I got the big part of the garage cleaned up enough to be able to put the pop-up camper in for some small repairs.

Today I worked on relocating the electrical outlets so they will be higher then the bench. I turned the old outlet boxes into junction boxes since the outlets was daisy chained across the wall. Now to work on the other wall before the rest of the bench goes in place.

Made some more progress today. I got the last outlet relocated and got the rest of the bench moved over. I cleaned up the room some and placed the wall cabinets on top of the bench. I'm going to make some french cleats to hang them on the wall. I messed with some other outlets and started identifying the breakers. I ended up not identifying three of the breakers so I left them off for the time being. I'll dig into the wiring some more once I go into the attic to start tracing them.

So why do I need a big garage?

Being from Texas I'm not use to being cooped inside the house all day during winter time. Plus I have hobbies that don't mix well with being inside the house and so on.

So to add to the garage, I made a trip to Texas and grabbed my Camaro and the rest of my stuff from my parents house. As if the garage isn't full enough I now have more stuff inside it. I really need to get on the ball of organization and get everything off the floor!

So I've been cleaning the garage and organizing it some as I get some time to play in it. my main goal was to get areas cleared out so we can park our vehicles in the garage. My wife will get the garage section with the riding mower, while my truck will go with the camaro. Before we couldn't park our car and truck in the garage so this is a major improvement so far!

I plan to move my work area toward the back right corner of the big section of the garage and then tear the big wall down so I can move around the garage freely instead of having to go outside to get to the other half. I want to finish the short section of the back right corner and paint it before I get everything back there. I will also install a door going to the wood section so I can keep wood stuff clear of mechanic stuff. But for now I'm still going through all of the **** that I've thrown in the garage.

So today I ventured into the wood section and got one of my cabinet hung up. I used the french cleat system to get the cabinet up there. I got one of the long cabinet almost ready to hang but I'll need help as they are heavy son of a gun!

New pic of today's lunch break work! I decided to get the other 2 cabinets that I have hung up on the wall. I'm pretty happy to get these off the bench and onto the wall as they been on the bench since I moved them in here about 3 months ago! Now I can clean up, move the stack of slabs to the wood storage area and then I can get all of the wood working tools out of the mechanic side of the shop and organized into the wood shop!

I suspected that also, there's been order forms on the base that has saying of going to a school. Plus the lady that previously owned the house was a janitor for a school so it's possible!

Today's short progress was to get the lights working, after some troubleshooting I determined it was a bad ballast and pulled one from a extra light fixture I had. I was correct that the ballast was bad and now I have one of the fixture working! Now to wire up the second ballast on the other fixture and be done with the lights in the wood room.

That rough sawn lumber is Maple! I had a maple tree that got struck by lightning about 4 yrs ago on my property of the old house. When it started showing signs of dying on one half of the tree had I had it cut down and the lumber milled from it. Then I took it to a kiln and let the guy dry it out for me. Been working toward getting that wood room ready for wood projects during winter time so I can maybe make some christmas presents!

This retaining wall reeks of her handywork but I can't see her doing the physical part of it so I suspect she had someone do it for her but with her guidelines.

You said previously that the PO was a school janitor. Maybe she got a few cheap laborers from the school.

I can see that happening also, heck I used to work on the teacher's cars so I know it can happen!

So my babysitter's middle child won this picture last year and they asked if I can make a picture frame for it. It's 36"x49" so it's a big picture frame! I've been reading what's the proper way to handle the pastel picture and the babysitter gave me a spray to seal the chalk on the paper. So this weekend I'll get ready to seal the art work and mount it to a hardboard to keep it flat while I go to Micheal's and get spacers and a non-glare glass for it. Then Once I know the exact thickness of everything I'll start gathering the wood to make the frame.

So I got the picture framed and will be giving it to the babysitter, I'm overall happy but the corners did kind of bug me as it was a hair out of line but better then what I started with for sure. I left the protective film on the acrylic sheet to protect it during moving.

Now I got a couple of repair jobs to do for the wife, anything to keep her happy!
