Coffee table glass insert

I was curious about something and if I should do it..

I like this coffee table but it has no option for glass, I was thinking about cutting the top out to put glass on it, however I'm not too sure on which tool(s) I should be using on it.. and if it would be worth the effort..

I do stained glass and cut a lot of glass, but for furniture tops, desk tops or anything that someone can fall on or through, I head to the local glass shop as they have the correct laminated glass and they can edge it correctly and tell you where support or skid pads should go. Especially important if the shape is not regular.

If I was doing it, I would decide on an opening, cut that opening out straight with a jigsaw, then use a router to take away a 1/4 inch strip on each side, plus down the depth of the thickness of the glass so it sits flush with the top.

If the top of the table isn't thick enough for you to router it. You will have to use like 1/2 inch wide moldings or pieces of wood nailed from the underside so the glass can rest on it.

I was going to use tempered Glass I was going to use this site here for glass, they do offer laminated glass.

I'm sitting on a couch with my feet on a coffee table like you describe. I didn't make it but I can tell you that f575gtc describes it pretty well. It's more like 3/8" than 1/4" though. Take some sandpaper and round the sharp edges of the glass off. Use a straight edge clamped to the table to guide the jigsaw and the router. The glass is around 3/16" thick.
