Southern Ontario. Well insulated and sealed 30x32. Radiant tube heater. I keep it somewhere around 66-72°F. 24/7.
Depending on what's happening. Heavy work = cooler and socializing = warmer.

Homemade solar might be a option for me. Every winter, I shut off the water and drain the pipes. Last winter, it never got below freezing in the shop, but it was a mild winter. A solar collector would probably add enough heat to keep the shop above freezing all winter.

I am in southern NH, and also a cheapass, err frugal person. Keep my 24×42 shop at 40-45 degrees F when not in use. Built in the mid 80's, still has the three wooden garage doors that are drafty. Did I mention that I am a cheapass?
I use the old round style Honeywell thermostat. I believe it has a three or four degree temperature swing before boiler kicks on.
Can you educate me on this milk barn thermostat?
Thanks,
Tom

line voltage, had mine since 96

Attached garage, 50k BTU NG Big Maxx that I finished hooking up this fall. Central MN

Insulated walls and garage door, air sealed attic and I'll be doing about ~16" of blown in this weekend on top of the minimal batts that are already up there.

Right now I keep it at about 43 F but when the attic is insulated I'll probably bump it up to 50 F and heat it up more when I'm out there working.

Western Nebraska, 3600 sq ft shop, 10’ walls, in-floor radiant, well insulated. I keep at 65 degrees air temp at eye level. Very comfortable, I work in shirtsleeves. In the past, monthly cost was around $100 for ng and electricity. Will be more this year due to increased energy costs.

I have my t-stat set to about 55 when I leave for the night. When I get home from work I bump it to 62 while I run in the house and change clothes. Within about 10-15 minutes it is up to set temp and ready to work. Very comfortable and nice that it doesn't have the take the chill off everything, just raise it a few degrees. I've found it really isn't all that much more cost to heat this way than by dropping it down lower each night. Maybe if I didn't work in the shop each night it would be different but I'm out there nearly each night most of the time.

I set mine at 40f if I'm not going to be out there. Just warm enough to keep anything from freezing. it's also the lowest temp the thermostat will go to.

Once I get out there and start doing work, I bump it up to 65f.

@walrus Did you document this solar setup? How many kw is your boiler? Mine is a 10kw and I would love to power it by solar.
I have no boiler, the solar stands alone. My solar heats water and puts the heat in the floor. See my thread on the build in my sig line

I have just an attached 20x20. I have insulated the ceiling that is open (part is a room above) and insulated the door.
It stays about 60 degrees during the winter.
I can say its a comfortable temp, most of the time. If I need to do something I have an electric heater that will keep me warm enough.

My garage is concrete block so it takes forever to warm up when it is cold. Once it is warm the walls hold a lot of heat and once it is up to temp it is not expensive to keep it warm.

I tried lowering the temp when I wasn’t working but it took too much energy to warm everything up once it got cold.
