Great forum, lurking has been productive!

Needing advice on what to use for flooring in the garage we have. I'm a new homeowner and no previous experience with all that comes along with it. :eyecrazy:

We recently moved into the house so I'm not too sure how cold the garage actually gets in the winter. The winters themselves here can see -40C and often the spring and fall are manic with wild swings possible from -20C to +20C in a given week. The garage is a double about 20'Wx25'L with insulation attached to the house. The garage itself doesn't have direct heating. In the winters they throw sand/gravel mix on the roads to aid traction. It can make a mess of the garage to say the least.

Currently the concrete is in pretty good shape and there seems to be remnants of a coating around the edges but essentially it appears as bare concrete almost everywhere with few stains. There is no drain in the floor but the garage slopes toward the doors.

I was considering the race deck stuff but was concerned with how it would handle the ton of sand and gravel that would be trekked in. Even the siping on winter tires get clogged with the **** during the winter and I would imagine the freeflow would just be packed with appropriately sized stones in the grating..... I considered the solid tiles but then wonder how all the melt off the cars would fill between the tiles and under them. I would doubt that enough evaporation would occur to not get a soggy floor under the tiles from frequent in-and-out with the cars.

The alternative coatings I can't say that I'm a fan of. First I am skeptical of the longevity (although I don't know much about them to be honest) and not a fan of the application and reapplication in the future. I don't like the idea of scrapping up with abrasives or solvents especially. I'm far from calling myself a treehugger but not fond of the idea of washing chemicals down the drain...

any insight and advice would really be appreciated!:rocker:

Are you looking for something you do yourself or a product that can be installed? Is the space going to be heated? My floor here hasn't had any heat yet and has been down 2 winters with studded tires and salt on it with no damage at all.

The space will not be heated but is an attached insulated garage, so it shouldn't subzero. I'm looking to install myself.

You haven't lived there long, have you ?

At -40C with the wind blowing, it will easily get down to -10C or -20C. The floor, especially near the outside edge will be about that cold too.

I live just outside of Edmonton and coated my floor with Epoxy Coat 5 years ago. The garage wasn't heated at the time but is now -we park in it all winter and all the **** from the roads falls off the car and builds up - I mop it very couple of weeks to clean the sand etc out. The floor is starting to show its age but has held up very well.
