Basically I just want to say I was wrong when I said Sanborn makes their own compressors.

Looks like Coleman bought Sanborn in the mid 90's. Coleman was then bought later by MAT Industries sometime around 2008.

This being said all Coleman & Sanborn compressors are made by MAT Industries. They do however still have Sanborn stamped on the hydro cert on each tank for most of their compressors if not all of them.

No problem with that. I get corrected often on the GJ and it is very tricky to track corporate subs and ownerships. Having said that, I know you have done a lot of research. Do you know who and where makes the coleman, kobalt, sanborn etc. pumps? I am turned off by the new Ingersoll rand pumps because of the Made in India stamp on them. After reading several horror stories on this board I would rather buy tawain or lesser degree even china than India.

I will look my pump over for you inside and out since I have it torn down and see if I come up with any markings. I currently do not know where any of the parts are manufactured. The conversations I have had with MAT Industries is that the units are assembled here in the US at minimum. They really made it sound like the facility has machining capabilities but I am sure the castings are sourced outside the USA. I know my previous company our USA casting supplier was $5/lb for the same thing we bought for $1/lb in India and China. We actually had 2 very good suppliers that far exceeded our USA foundries that were located in India.

Anyways I'll dig around because I would like to know as well.

I will be interested in what you find out. I have a Sanborn Black Max 5hp 60 gal with a 1992 serial #plate.

Let me guess :) (I could be wrong)

Red Tank. Aluminum pump most likely a model 130 (Alternate was a 165)compressor pump with seperate valve plate assembly. Back then the valve guides could be screwed or riveted to the plate. They went to rivets as the screws kept comming out and dropping onto the top of the piston and just hammering the **** outta the piston and usually crushing the top compression ring and damaging the valve plate as well. Reason was the screws were steel in an aluminum plate. Campbell hausfeld had the same problem for over 45 years. Your unit probably has a metal belt guard that is actually made nice and heavy compared to today's standards. Does your unit have a white metal manifold between the pump and electric motor that has the pressure switch on top? if so, that manifold is NLA. Pump was made overseas. Not in USA, but an Excellent pump! I still have them units out to this very day and they work fine in one and two man body shops.

I have a Coleman gas powered compressor from the early (?) 90's that has the Sanborn cast iron 2-stage pump. I works well except that the compressor valves have light coiled spiral springs that break and jam up in the downstream parts, like the 1-way check valve into the tank. I have to replace the vave units every few years. I've even thought of putting a magnet in the discharge to catch the shrapnel! When a valve dies the symptom is usually poor output and often the relief valve between the first and second stages starts to blow off. 10 hp Kohler Magnum for power.

I was just looking at the Eastwood 5 hp/ 80 gal compressor and to try and to try and figure out who makes it I Googled one of the part numbers. It came back as a Sanborn Coleman Powermate number. I gues they are still making them. The corporate history is to complicated for me. I want to know I can always get parts. I thought the Kobalt was made by the people that make Bellaire and the HF compressor.

If it's from the early 90's it could be a B4900, which they bought from ABAC. They imported pumps to build packages. Have a few specs...B4900/T29S

Is this what it looks like?
