I recently picked up a vice while traveling and planned to clean it up and use it. When I got home I noticed that it was not a cast vice, but a steel vice that was welded together. I have never seen a vice like this and would appreciate any information that can be provided. I will try to post some pictures.

I've seen a few of this since joining GJ, in the vise thread IIR, and they appear to be decent vises. I suspect stronger than a similar vise in cast, for the same weight. I've also seen a gigantic vise that was something like 4 feet long made in a similar fashion.

Pretty rare though, and probably was cost prohibitive to make over the long haul.

I actually turned one of those down at an estate sale because i had no idea what it was or who made it. It was bolted to an old Craftsman tool box to boot but they were both so beaten, the 20.00 price tag was still too much.

It should clean up nicely and i don't think you will have to worry about any nasty suprise cracks once its stripped.
