Columbian 506 Dilemma

For a while, I have held onto an old 506 that need repair. It needs the main vise nut(threads stripped), bronze washer, and collar at a minimum. Thats over $100 plus tX and Im not sure the main spindle is good. Its a very old unit, with the t type jaws and not rotatable base. Its a project on the back burner.

Saturday was doing some cleaning out of junk, and took a load to the local scrap yard. In the pile was a 506m2 which was a newer version with the bolt in jaws. One jaw missing, but had the pin, the vise nut, the bronze washer, and the collar. the main spindle looked smaller, and I wasnt sure the jaw could be bought, or if threads were stripped in the movable head. Fixed base and i didnt have a caliper to check the thread OD.

Therefore, here is my dilemma:
Should I spend the $100+ and hope it fixes the early one, or should I go friday to pickup the other vise and attempt to make 1 from 2?

also, I couldnt find a thread spec for the spindle to tell if my early 506 is worn out.
Anyone know what the major diameter and width of the teeth should be?
Anyone know if they changed the spindle thread size between early and M2 models?

Thanks for everyones help.

Go pick up the other one and make 2 from 1 if it has the hard to get parts. Bring a caliper (and you first vise) and compare the threads/nut to make sure everything fits and is not worn out.

I also vote for salvaging the scrap yard vise and rebuilding the first vise. You might be able to buy the scrap yard vise for 0.30-0.80 cents/lb., as many scrap yards will sell their material by the pound.

thanks for the replies. I thinking friday is going to be a good day with the vice pickup.

The major OD of the main spindle thread is 1.125" with a few small gouges on the teeth. Can anyone confirm this is standard? ie not worn down.

So I went to see the vise and its pretty beat. was a 506-2 which was smaller than my old 506. I pulled the spindle and nut out anyway.

got them home, and they are different. The 506-2 main spindle is 1" major well the 506 is 1.125"
Even the spindle nut is too short to fit in the early 506.
Damn, if anyone can use the 506-2 spindle, nut and collar, PM me.

guess I will keep looking unless anyone has any early 506 they are parting out.

Going tonight to look at an early 604 with rotatable base.
Hoping to get washer collar, and spindle nut to use on my 506.

Anyone know if rotating base from a 604 can be put on a 506?
Should the 506 have one or two locks to fix it firm to the rotating base? The 604 only has one.

Thanks

The 604 was a nice vise, but spindle was too small diameter
To do anything with for my 506.

The search Continues for the spindle nut, the collar and brass bushing.

Looked at a 605m2 the other night. Had the smaller spindle nut and spindle besides a smaller rotatable base

It's a good parts vice on Cleveland Craigslist if anyone needs items from it.

The search continues for the large 506, 606, 605, 505 parts
