Newbie looking for a vise. Looks to be in good, original condition. Is $150 fair?

Thanks in advance.
Walter

If the vise is in excellent condition and you are willing to pay it, its not too bad of a price. Pictures would help us give you a better idea of what the vise is worth though.

Columbians are well built and should last a lifetime. I have one at my office on the weld table and its served me well

Offer 100, try to get them down. If its the "bullet" type that would be a score. Check ebay completed auctions to see selling prices, + they buyer have to pay shipping and that ain't cheap on something that heavy.

Well based on your comments I went to have a look.

Bigger than I thought. Turned with one finger like butter.

I had already spoken to the gent on the phone. He was asking $225 on Craigslist. He said he would take $150. After seeing the vise I offered $125, and he was really struggling, so I agreed to $150. He thanked me for that. Nice guy, and I think, gave me a good deal.

Here are some photos.

Around here that's a screaming deal. 6" vises are few and far between and that one looks to be in great shape. That is quite a monster!!

I just picked up a 5" Columbian I'm cleaning up right now. These are really heavy duty vises. (Not all Columbians are.)

Good deal! BTW, I'm a long time Columbian vise user and I don't think they made bullet vises.

I have one almost exactly like that - maybe a little older that I paid $50 for a few years ago.

It may have been a bit more beat up than yours. I cleaned it up and painted it and put it to work, and now it's getting beat up again.

It's a good vise with a huge opening capacity. The screw turns nice and smooth, and it has a long handle and it turns down on something pretty hard. The only problem with mine is the jaw is a bit looser than I would like - but I think the the place I got it from was about 80 years old, and they thought it might have been put in when the place was new, so that's not surprising.

Thanks, guys, for all the support. I am a beginning auto/motorcycle mechanic, and woodworker. Lived in the city for many years, now have some elbow room, and space to pursue my interests.

I love everything about old tools, and have accumulated quite a few for woodworking. Now looking more on the mechanical side. Fun to find, amazing quality and durability. Cliche, but they really don't make them like that anymore.

Excited to put this vice to work!
