Can anyone ID the year or years this was made? I think it might of been my dad's. It's missing the central screw from the base to the body. Is that usually a shoulder screw? The nut with the dovetail is totally stripped. Can I find a replacement? Looks like square threads which I've never made but could probably figure out.

I know Nick (autopts) said he just found a few sets of new jaws for the old D44s. Maybe contact him to see what hes got. The D44 is a good basic vise but not a vise that people usually try to fix or rebuild. I can understand the sentimental value though. Parts aint gonna be easy to find. Ive got a decent D44 sitting here i could sell you for cheap. You could part it off to fix yours or just use it as is.

I have 2 of these and refinished them. Exploded parts picture attached showing the swivel bolt detail.

Regarding date, my swivel base had date cast into it. No date on any of the other parts.

I also had purchased replacement vise jaw inserts from viceparts.com in 2014 part number BA-D44 "D44 Jaw Insert Kit" but I don't think they are in business anymore.

Vise shown does not have the replacement jaw inserts, those are originals. The replacements are not as nice and are not contoured to the body of the vise.

Can't help you on the stripped nut.

Nope.

Mine looks pretty identical to yours and late 70's early 80's makes sense.

Oh well, can't help you on the date then.

I searched thru my pictures and zoomed in on the swivel bolt, attached picture. It is indeed a hexagon head shoulder bolt, not sure the shank diameter or length

Found this link for some jaw inserts:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/401345965992?vectorid=229466&item=401345965992&rmvSB=true

This thread https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=350495
indicates that the jaws are likely compatible with Wilton #76654S41.

This thread was how I found the above GJ link.

Good luck!

New (to me) parts from bbirder. Huge thanks! Handle much straighter than mine. I'm thinking about taking off the jaws and making some aluminum jaws for gripping stuff I don't want to mash. I already have a 6" newish Wilton for heavier work. Thoughts?

mine wasn't a shoulder screw, it was a big ol slotted pan head and mine looked original. Since the rest of the photos here seem to have shoulder screws maybe mine was not original. The original jaws were not particularly impressive and I already passed it on to another friend sorry.

I just picked up one from an estate sale today. It has the big slotted pan screw as well, so I assume it’s likely original
