I’ve been looking for a useable vise to upgrade the cheap import I’m currently using. Bought for $125 on CList today, and yes, I am fully aware that many of you score some great deals on the flea market / yard sale route, but I don’t have the available time for that, so any extra $50 or $75 to drive to someone’s house locally and buy it is worth it to me. I suspect it will outlive me.

After some searching on GJ, here is what I think I know. From the mid-1920s due to the Hardware designation. Weighs about 55 lbs. I think the channel shaped jaws are fairly specific to this time period. Not the T-shaped jaws I’ve seem in many of the Columbian photos. The model is cast into the vise and not stamped. Am I close on what this is?

Condition seems decent for a user, clearly been used, but I don’t think abused. Been repainted (poorly?) as they painted over the jaws. A bit of a small bend in the swivel lock handle.

Anything I should do to it before just bolting it the bench?

Thanks!

Clean, lubricate it and bolt to a bench. Columbians machinist vises are respectable but not really collector items. I had the non swivel version. Perfectly preserved under 5 coats of mottled paint. The guy i eventually sold it to was ecstatic to get a stealthy good vise to mount on his truck.

Not worried about the collectability or frankly the value at $125. Disassemble to clean, or just have it with some brake clean? Light machine oil for lubrication?

Great find! I just picked up a 604 1/2 but it's nowhere near as nice as this one. Plus it's a Craftsman and have been told it's Japanese.

Very nice! I have a Columbian D45-M4 I bought online. I too never find any local deals. I would grease the screw and bolt it down.

I’ve got a 604 from my grandfather, don’t know what the difference is between the 604 and 604 and 1/2.

I believe the original color on them is black but I’m not sure.
