Hey,
A few weeks ago, my son found this Columbian 4 1/2" Machinist vise at a garage sale. He was sweet enough to get it for me.
The vise has seen a lot of use and it's caked with grease, so I decided to take it apart and clean it. I should have posted a note asking how to take the vise apart before I actually tried. I removed the pin at the base of the back of the vise. It looks like it holds the dovetailed screw arbor (sorry if that's not the correct term) in place. With the pin removed, I still can't pull the vise apart. I don't want to force things and possibly crack this old vise.
Does anyone know if there are set screws or more pins that I have to remove first? Pic 1384 shows a small ****** a few inches above the handle. Could this be a pin? Pic 1405 shows the front end of the main screw. It looks as though the previous owner soldered or welded little "ears" to both sides of the pin to keep it from falling out. Do you think it would be OK to sand these flush and tap the pin out?
I have lots of questions but these will do for now.
Thanks in advance for any information you can give me.
