Picked up another vise last night for $40.00 Any idea what it's worth and when it was made. I don't think I did bad at that price.

Great find, great price. I have a soft spot for Columbians. While they don't have the mass of others, due to their hollow castings, they are very strong. They not very flashy, they just work.

Good buy. Don't see any damage to slide area or anything, just an ugly paint job lol. Good find bud.

I would say WW2 to late 50's-ish era.

Columbians are kind of hard to date, they never really changed the style...

Prices on eBay tend to be around $100 give or take...

According to previous threads the Columbian vises with "Columbian" cast in a curved fashion like that are older models. Later, maybe the 70's, they went to Columbian cast straight but still vertical. Then there were newer versions with Columbian horizontal but still with T shaped jaws. Recent ones same way but without the T shaped jaws.

I grew up in Cleveland and also have a soft spot for these vises.

No way!
Who would have thought that would work?!

So... you just asked for a deal on a vise and you got it?
That...is... just...absolutely...wild.

Kinda kills the whole "vises are like diamonds" vibe.

You've never tried this? I usually re-post something along those lines on CL every month or so. Wanted: Old vises, anvils, etc. I've had a few hits. :rocker:

Once you weed through the dreamers, fishers and typical CL B.S. you can find what you need through the wanted section pretty easily.

I've had 3 replies for my add, 1 was over 1 1/2 hours away, I passed. 2nd said he had 3 old vices didn't tell me how big just said they were priced at $20.00 to $100.00 will go look at them this weekend. The last was the Columbian 604. Also saw an add for a table saw. Called and said I wasn't interested in the saws but would like to buy the 2 vices sitting on it. He said sure $45.00. One was a 6 inch wilton bullet copy made in Taiwan and the other was a Chas. Parker 102. Just sold the Taiwan vice on Craigslist for $60.00 Also found my Paramo #6 swivel base on Craigslist for $35.00

I put an add in craigslist. WANTED big old Vice for shop I built prefer USA made

I've tried this before, but I would get some dreamers trying to sell me an exposed screw 10lb'er for $50 probably because google sent them to this sites vise thread and they thought it was valuable. Oh yeah, and the associated spam that you get from anything you list on CL.

I can say that my last two vise deals were scored from people selling a lot of tools on CL. It's safe to assume that if a guy has a garage full of decent US tools there is a vise or two resting on a workbench somewhere.
