Columbian Vise D44 M3 - Same as 204 M3?

I picked up a much needed swivel base vise for light and medium duty work. It was a used Columbian D44 M3 and is intact with all parts.

I want to do a restoration on it before putting it back in service. Read through the threads, but could not find out if the D44 M3 and the 204 M3 are the same vise and if the parts interchange on viseparts.com

I would like to replace the split collar with the

504-25 COLLAR & SET SCREW

and the jaw screws with 1/4"-20 x 5/8" Jaw Insert Screws (will work).

Anyone order any spares from viseparts for the D44?

Thanks

I took a look at the parts page....you might try this for an answer. The Collar and set screw are listed for a 504 model Columbian. Right across the page is the Lead Screw part 504-23. It has a description that says: 7/8 x 4 Acme thread. This should indicate that the collar for this vise will just slide over a 7/8" diameter lead screw. Measure your D44 lead screw diameter and see how that will work for you.

Just a follow up for anyone else watching this thread.

Emailed Viseparts.com and measured the spindle of my D44 M3.

My spindle is a 3/4-4 Acme Thread and is 14 inches long. So I ordered replacement parts for a 503 -1/2 current vise.

(BA-10102S25) 503-1/2-25/603-1/2-25 COLLAR & SET SCREW KIT

and a

(BA-10102S24) 503-1/2-24/603-1/2-24 BRASS SPINDLE WASHER

Along with :

(BA-87001S39) Jaw Insert Screws (1/4"-20 x 5/8" flat head socket screw with nylon locking patch) Includes (8) Screws

Should be in at the end of the week and will post my results.

Just an update:

The washer for the spindle is too large.

Screws are of course fine

Collar and set screw - hmmnnn I know this is for reversing only, but I saved the crimped ring and unsure if I this will work. More later.

Will post pictures now that I have a camera back in the house.

Hi there can be no comparison between the "D" series and the 200 series. For my own records, where is the parts changeability being found?

This the is older D series

This is the 200 series

Hi,

The parts I am seeking - jaw screws, Spindle washer and ring and collar are the same size as the 204. So I am really trying this out and consulted with Viseparts, who also thought it might work. Otherwise, I can return them.

The Spindle washer is too large in diameter, so I will use a machine shim 3/4 in hole x various sizes.

The collar and set screw may be able to be adapted. I bought a shorter set screw and will see if i can machine the spindle or simply tap a small hole in the spindle to secure the screw and allow it too rotate with the spindle. It may fail, so I have the original part to secure the 3/4 acme spindle.

Sorry - did not mean to imply a direct fit - just trying to put this vise back in service.

Will post on the collar.

Thanks,

Frank

Oh, you are actually talking with Beejax about these parts. I wish you luck.

Update:

I took the dynamic jaw to a machine shop, had them grind and smooth the Boss down where the spindle inserts. Also had them machine an oilite bushing (3/4 id) to help with the racking.

Collar works very well and vise operates very smoothly with the bushing.

So the collar will work with some additional work. You could get away with grinding the boss down (everyone I have seen is rough anyway) and do away with the split retainer.

Also, the vise jaw screws are just fine.

Thanks,

Frank
