I pried the hell outta the retaibibg ring to get it off so i could paint my little d43 1/2. But its just like a washer with a slit with no spring characteristics. How in the world does ut go back on? Cant use snap ring pkiers cause they dont fit nor, does the collar really have any sproing to it.

If it were mine and I couldn't get it to snap back on, I'd heat it up and spread it, then mash it back tight once on before it cooled.....

Have you been able to tighten it up? My Columbian has a lot of slop in it I want to tighten up.

Toss the washer clip in the trash and go to Home Depot and get a set screw collar that fits the diameter of the spindle.

Yes shaft collar. Op is this the Columbian where the lead screw is exposed or inside the slide?
If inside the slide you may have to trim material off the outside. Ace will have the best selection after the pro supply houses. I did this twice but had to massage the o.d. For clearance. If it's the exposed lead screw style it shouldn't matter

Typically, under the U channel protecting the screw, at the front end, dynamic jaw, to keep the screw pulling the dynamic jaw out while opening the vise. Typically a notch in the screw for it.
Thanks. I am working with the same vise as the OP. This thread was very helpful in me fixing it. Unlike the OP, my retaining washer popped itself out somehow, so I have installed an E-clip. There is a lot of pressure backing out of a full close on the vise, which has popped the E clip out once already. There is no spring on this vise. So I am considering going the shaft collar route next.

You might put something to close the gap a bit. The gap on mine was 1/4” notch vs a thin clip, so jaw slop and ability to skew the clip. I think I used a hair clip style, and put a couple of washers in, so the clip is not bearing on the jaw while you open it.
Yes you are right there is not much room to work with. As far as I can tell the e clip or equivalent and a washer is standard on some vises. There may be room for one more washer but getting the clip on after that would be a real exercise in patience (in other words not for me). Can you give me a better idea of the clip you used? EDIT never mind, I think I found what you are talking about thanks.

Mine is underneath, so I had more room, different vise. This won’t work for yours I fear.
Maybe two e clips? Is your handle pushed all the way in to create the most space possible?
