The dynamic jaw inserts unexpectedly cracked and broke on my grandfather's old vise this morning. How do I exactly remove the insert. I'm asking for the expert's opinion before I start working on removing it. Once out, I'm sure a buddy can make new ones.

All I did was clamp a hydraulic 90° fitting in it to clean the threads and the piece just fell off. Overall it looks like a pretty fresh break.

I got it 50% apart. The retaining pins do go completely threw, just was very hard to tell when looking. Now just need to get the insert out, it's rather stuck. I had to get my *** to work so for what's it's worth, I sprayed the seems with kroil.

This is how I remove the pins. I drive the pins up from the bottom, set up a clamp setup and tig weld a slide hammer then slide hammer the pins up and out. I did 5 vises at once and this method worked well for me. Good luck.

I don't normally work on vises so please excuse me if I am missing something but if you can drive the pins half way out from the bottom, why can't you use the right size pin punch to push them the rest of the way instead of pulling them?

Might work on your vises but mine the pin froze up going down. My guess is when the hole was drilled it did not create a true round hole after it broke through the casting, a issue drilling and breaking out on a angled surface. On one or two it looked like the pin would hit the casting. Pin should come out as it goes in. This method worked for me.

My suggestion on your friend making your jaws is to clean up the jaw face and after fitting the jaws clamp them up and pilot drill and ream the three pin holes. I chose to go up one nominal pin size and ended up with a clean hole. This was done before heat treating.

More pic's of my jaw fitting and a few finished vises.

I plan on unbolt ingredients the vise and bring him everything once I get the inserts out. The pins appear to be the easy part, the insert itself is rather stubborn.
