Combination Wrench Length

Combination wrench length over the years seem to have gotten longer, in the <3/4 or 19mm anyway. As a millwright, I used a Gray set from the '80s.These were the same length as Proto, Craftsman, or Snap-On of their day. On my last job, 6 years ago, my tools might have gone missing so I picked up on sale a set of Mastercraft Maximum combinations. These were longer in smaller sizes.

In these small sizes, I'm not sure if that's much an advantage. I was working on my quad and even the Gray was too long, so grabbed a stubby and muttered the magic words, "That was easy."

Sometimes "the longer the stick, the better the fight" applies, but Stubby Wrenches have their place too.

Once in a while, nothing beats a Crowfoot on an extension.

Maybe the tool companies made standard wrenches longer because they weren't selling enough stubbies

I feel like a lot of these are shorter. I grew up using my father's SO stuff. When I got my first Cman wrenches in the mid 90s I remember thinking they were shorter than my father's wrenches. This was something I didn't like as I found my self busting a few knuckles when trying to release that tight fastener. I've since added a set of long wrenches (and ratchets) to my mix.

If I just had one I would want something longer than the Cman wrenches. If I can have a long and short set then the Cman length is great since they do work nicely for times when you don't have to really crank down. I have the longer wrenches when the leverage is important.
