Combination Wrenches Bigger than 3/4" -- Where are you getting them?

I have a few standard combination wrench sets that go up to 3/4", and it's time to expand to at least 1" and possibly 1 1/4." I want USA-made wrenches, SAE only, preferably with WrightGrip (or Armstrong or someone else's version of this).

So, where are you getting them, and are you picking them up as singles or is there a set I don't know about?

I get my replacements at McMaster Carr. The premium line they sell, which is USA, and Armstrong.
Ordered some replacement sockets, they were Proto. So, they may have switched vendors.

Best deal out there for an add-on set up to 1". Kobalt USA made by Williams. No fancy open ends, but I've been using my old Proto Los Angeles wrenches in the larger sizes, and have still never needed the bite on the open end when getting up in the big sizes.

I think those are made by Danaher. I bought a bunch of singles from Cripe and they match my KDs (danaher). Still a good deal.

If you're patient, and can afford to wait a bit, you can find them at estate sales and on C-L. You probably won't have a matched set, but you'll save a bundle; those large sizes are quite pricey.

Good luck

Danaher doesn't make anything except money. :) They do own a lot of good brand tool companies.

I hate to say it but I have the craftsman jumbo set, I think goes up to 1 3/8, and a snappy 1-1/2 I picked up off fleabay cheap. I have found that they are just fine, when you get that big, even imported wrenches are tuff enough.

I found a local shop that builds hoses and pipes for the oilfield that carries Wright tools.
You might be amazed at what is right under your nose if you look. They are also helpful in my shop build for air, plumbing and general shop supplies. Pawn shops are a good place too. I may have an advantage being in the middle of an oil patch as a lot of tools seem to show up!

Yes, the Kobalts are not Wrightgrip style. Neither the Williams or Danaher versions are. They are more like polished Craftsmans. Might as well get Craftsman if you are looking at old Danaher Kobalts. You can get NOS USA Craftsmans on eBay for a better price.

I think you're right, it slipped my mind last night. I bought some of the larger Kobalts through them to fill in missing sizes (1-1/4, 1-5/16, etc). They are solid wrenches, good pebble finish, and not much difference between the KD, Armstrong, and Allen USA wrenches sold on there.

The ones in that picture look an awful lot like the Kobalt/Allen/Menard's Masterforce/KD made by Danaher after Lowe's dumped Williams.

If I were going to get larger wrenches made by Danaher/Apex, I'd just get NOS Craftsman on the cheap from ebay for the easier warranty.

Probably would never need the warranty, though. I've never seen a broken wrench bigger than 3/4". Even Chinese wrenches that big seem sturdy enough (I might worry about the fit, though).

Snap On up to 1 1/4". I have an old Indestro 1 1/2" monster that I think I have used one time in the 40 years I've owned it.

A friend of mine worked for a gas compressor parts business. Tools walked off all the time, so he went to Harbor Freight and bought all the wrenches and sockets there. He said no one stole them and they didn't break either.

Either off the truck, or Cripes/ToolTopia. Depends if i need it now, or can wait.

Snap-on up to 1-1/2, SK to 2", Armstrong for a couple over 2".

The snappys I either bought off the truck, or got from my old man. Bought the huge *** wrenches used.

If you have access to a Mac dealer, they're offering at least a metric set (standards are probably available as well) this month on promo for a good price. They're USA Knuckle Savers, really nice wrenches. I think sizes 21-27 or so. Definitely worth considering.

I personally added mine as I needed them, some new, some used. No particular brand, but I like the Macs and Snap-Ons the best.

I have Craftsman up to 1 3/8" and 30mm in metric. Above that i just have harbor freight up to 2 1/2. They have held up just fine and i don't feel near as bad if I have to hammer on the side of the wrench to bust a fitting loose. Plus, what the tool trucks want for bigger wrenches is pretty outrageous.

Although a Canadian dealer, JET tools offer well made wrenches, I have a few 1 3/8, 1 7/16, 1 13/16. Wright makes their wrightgrip up to 4 inches I was told. I have a couple of them to in larger sizes. They are the best for sure.

Ya, that Kobalt set of four: 13/16, 7/8, 15/16, and 1" is a USA Danaher product; for the price, I am satisfied with mine...

Cripe has-had a good selection of USA KD, Kobalt, Armstrong, and Allen combination wrenches, some long pattern, some short, satin and polished offerings... A while back; I pieced together four sets of metric wrenches from their stock...(Christmas gifts, vehicle kits)..

with Cripe, I considered the combined shipping charges very reasonable.
